BASIC BIBLE DOCTRINES

This Study is a study of some “Basic Bible Doctrines” of the Word of God. The word ‘doctrines’ means ‘teachings’. Thus, this will be a study of some basic teachings from the Bible.

This Study of the Holy Scriptures, when properly completed and understood, provides a good Biblical foundation for further lifetime study of the precious Word of God. A much more indepth Bible study can be done for each doctrine.

Fill in the blanks with the correct words from the Bible, using only a King James Version Bible. After a given Scripture has been read place a check mark next to the Scripture listing on the line.

We always need the Lord’s help and enlightenment as we study His Word. We must always begin Bible study with prayer asking the Lord to guide our hearts and minds and give us understanding of His truth as we study His Word. Our desire is for the Lord to show us and to teach us Biblical truthes. We must be willing for Him to teach us these truthes.

Scripture must be honestly compared with other Scriptures to arrive at the correct intended meaning. All Scripture is in perfect harmony. No Scripture will ever contradict another Scripture. We compare Scripture so that the word of truth will be rightly divided (cf. II Timothy 2:15).

The Doctrines in this Study are from the American Baptist Association Doctrinal Statement [www.abaptist.org]. For the purposes of this Study the wording from that Statement has been changed somewhat. The “Other References and Comments” are given by Pastor Rick McVeigh with help and input from Rose Lawn Missionary Baptist Church members. Comments are usually enclosed in brackets [ ]. (Note: ‘cf.’ means ‘to compare’. It is usually a reference which is to be read from the Bible by the student).

1. Love one for another as Jesus loves His children manifests our discipleship, proves our love for God and symbolizes the authority of Jesus’ New Testament churches. Love is therefore the great commandment of the LORD Jesus Christ upon which all others are dependent.

-“Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked Him a question, tempting Him, and saying, Master, which is the ___________ commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt _______ the Lord thy God with all thy _________, and with all thy _______, and with all thy _______. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy _____________ as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:35-40 ____).

-“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one ___________; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all ______ know that ye are my ___________, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34, 35 ____).

-“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, ________ I have loved __________” (John 15:12 ____).

-I John 4:7-21 ____ (NOTE: ‘his brother’ refers to a brother in Christ, a spiritual brother; both having been born of God.)

-“Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is _________ of God: and every one that loveth Him that begat _________________ him also that is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the ______________ of God, when we love God, and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not ______________” (I John 5:1-3 ____). (cf. Luke 6:46 ____) [NOTE: Here is a way that a saved person can know and have assurance that he is saved.]

-“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast ________ thy first love. _______________ therefore from whence thou art fallen, and _____________, and ____ the first ___________; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent” (Revelation 2:4, 5 ____). [NOTE: Our ‘first love’ of every child of God, of every church, is to be the Lord Jesus Christ.]

Other References and Comments:

-“These things I _______________ you, that ye love one another” (John 15:17 ____). [NOTE: ‘One another’ in regards to love is referring to those in one of Jesus’ New Testament churches.]

-“Be kindly affectioned one to another with ______________ love; in honour preferring one another;” (Romans 12:10 ____).

-I Corinthians 13 ____ [NOTE: The importance of love; the characteristics of love; the duration of love, etc. This chapter is referred to by many as the ‘love chapter’ of the Bible.]

-“But the fruit of the Spirit is _____________, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, __________, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22, 23 ____). [This is in contrast with the ‘works of the flesh’. Galatians 5:19-21____]

-“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of ___________, kindness, humbleness of __________, meekness, longsuffering; _______________ one another, and _______________ one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on _____________, which is the bond of __________________” (Colossians 3:12-14 ____). [NOTE: ‘charity’ is the agape kind of love. It is love in it’s highest and greatest form. ‘Perfectness’ refers to spiritual maturity in the faith.]

-“And the Lord make you to ______________ and _____________ in love one toward ____________, and toward ________ men, even as we do toward you:” (I Thessalonians 3:12 ____).

- “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto ________________ love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart __________________:” (I Peter 1:22 ____). [NOTE: The first ‘love’ is from the Greek philadelphian; the second word ‘love’ is from the Greek agapesate. For the distinction between the two, see below.]

-“Honour all men. Love the __________________. Fear God. Honour the king” (I Peter 2:17 ____). [NOTE: ‘brotherhood’: those who are spiritual brothers in Christ.]

-“My little children, let us _________ love in word, neither in tongue; but in __________ and in ___________” (I John 3:18 ____).

-The English New Testament was translated from Koine Greek. The meaning of the Greek ‘agape’ (of which ‘agapesate’, as used above, is a form):“In respect of agapao as used of God, it expresses the deep and constant "love" and interest of a perfect Being towards entirely unworthy objects, instilling, producing and fostering a reverential "love" in them towards the Giver, and a practical "love" towards those who are partakers of the same, and a desire to help others to seek the Giver “. "Love can be known only from the actions it prompts. God's love is seen in the gift of His Son, (1 John 4:9, 10____). But obviously this is not the love of complacency, or affection, that is, it was not drawn out by any excellency in its objects, (Romans. 5:8____). It was an exercise of the divine will in deliberate choice, made without assignable cause save that which lies in the nature of God Himself, (cf. Deuteronomy 7:7, 8____). "Love had its perfect expression among men in the Lord Jesus Christ, (II Corinthians 5:14___; Ephesians 2:4____; 3:19____; 5:2____); Christian love is the fruit of His Spirit in the Christian, (Galatians 5:22____)” (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words) (Copyright (C) 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers).

"Christian love, whether exercised toward the brethren, or toward men generally, is not an impulse from the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity is discovered. Love seeks the welfare of all, (Romans 15:2____), and works no ill to any, (Romans 13:8-10____); love seeks opportunity to do good to `all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith,' (Galatians 6:10____)” (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words) (Copyright (C) 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers).

-The meaning of the word Greek ‘phileo’ (of which ‘philadelphian’ as used above, is a form): “is to be distinguished from ‘agapao’ in this, that ‘phileo’ more nearly represents "tender affection." The two words are used for the "love" of the Father for the Son, (John 3:35____) (No. 1), and (John 5:20____) (No. 2); for the believer, (John 14:21____) (No. 1) and (John 16:27____) (No. 2); both, of Christ's "love" for a certain disciple, (John 13:23____) (No. 1), and (John 20:2____) (No. 2). Yet the distinction between the two verbs remains, and they are never used indiscriminately in the same passage; if each is used with reference to the same objects, as just mentioned, each word retains its distinctive and essential character” (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words)(Copyright (C) 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers).

-“For God so loved the ____________, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever ______________ in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 ____). [NOTE: This proves that God loves you, and all people, with a great love. The Lord Jesus Christ is God’s ‘only begotten Son’. cf. Mark 1:1____ Acts 3:26____]

-“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His __________ love wherewith He loved us, Even when we were ___________ in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Ephesians 2:4-6 ____). [NOTE: The word ‘quickened’ means to be made alive, spiritually.]

-“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet _____________, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His ___________, we shall be saved from wrath _____________ Him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:8-10 ____). [NOTE: The Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God. It was Jesus who willingly shed His blood on the cross for us.]

-“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And __________ in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given ________________ for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour” (Ephesians 5:1, 2 ____). [NOTE: The ‘sweetsmelling savour’ proves that the sacrifice that Jesus gave of Himself for the sins of all people was well-pleasing to God the Father and was accepted by Him. cf. Isaiah 53:11____ ]

-“Behold, what manner of ___________the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the ________ of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not” (I John 3:1____).

2. The entire Bible, the Word of God, the Scriptures, was given by verbal inspiration of God, and only the Bible is the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice.

-“Thy word is ____________ from the ______________________: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ____________” (Psalm 119:160 ____ ).

-“All Scripture is given by _________________ of God, and is profitable for ________________, for _________________, for __________________, for _____________________ in ___________________: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good _____________” (II Timothy 3:16, 17 ____ ). [NOTE:Here the word ‘perfect’ refers to a child of God that is spiritually mature in the faith.]

Other References and Comments:

-‘Infallible’ means “incapable of error; never wrong”; contains no mistakes; can not fail; the Bible is completely trustworthy

-‘Verbal’ means “concerned merely with words, as distinguished from facts or ideas”; “word for word”; every word of the Bible is inspired of God.

-‘Inspiration’ literally means “God-breathed”. This was the manner by which the Holy Spirit instilled His words into the hearts and minds of certain holy men of God, chosen by God to pen His holy Word, “in order to secure the putting into written and permanent form the truth [the very words] which God has communicated to man” (Christian Theology, Emery Bancroft, Zondervan Publishing House, 1955-1976, p. 36). God breathed into these chosen men every word that He wanted them to pen down. These holy men were obedient to do precisely that.

-The Bible is ‘inerrant’: “without error in all regards”. Whatever the subject matter may be that the Word of God speaks of it is absolutely true.

-Illumination: The action of the Holy Spirit toward His children as they read and study the Word of God. He gives understanding of His Word to His children as they diligently pray and study His Word and put these truths into practice in their lives.

-God revealed His Word to man, He gave it by inspiration. Chosen holy men of God penned those words exactly as given to them by the inspiration of God. Today the indwelling Holy Spirit illuminates, enlightens His children to the Word.

-God has preserved His Word down through the ages (Preservation).

-The King James Version Bible (The Authorized Version) is the Word of God as God has preserved it in the English language.

-We must remember that there are liars whose words are spoken and recorded in the Word of God. The words of the devil, false prophets and false preachers are deceptive words. The truth is the fact that they actually said these words. The words of the devil and the false prophets are not to be followed. The truth of God is recorded in the words from Him, His prophets and His preachers. Remember: CONTEXT, CONTEXT!

-“The words of the LORD are ________________ words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times” (Psalm 12:6 ____). [NOTE: The number seven is used in the Scriptures as meaning ‘completeness’, ‘fully’; The Word of God is completely pure, true and is of great eternal value.)

-“Every _____________ of God is ______________: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5 ____).

-“But I will shew thee that which is noted in the Scripture of ________________: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince” (Daniel 10:21 ____).

-“If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the Scripture cannot be _________________;” (John 10:35 ____ ) [NOTE: Since the Scriptures are the Word of God it is impossible that they not be true. They will stand eternally unaltered, unchanged, unweakened and unbroken.]

-“Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall ___________ pass away” (Mark 13:31 ____).

-“For ____________, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89 ____).

-“And take the helmet of salvation, and the ______________of the Spirit, which is the word of God:” (Ephesians 6:17 ____).

-“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any __________________ interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but __________ men of God spake as they were _____________________ by the Holy Ghost” (II Peter 1:20, 21 ____ ). [The entire Word of God, all 66 books, is totally in absolute harmony and agreement within itself. There are no discrepancies in the Word of God. If a person thinks he has found a discrepancy in the Bible it is an indication that more study is needed. The Word of God is the best commentary on the Word of God. Use cross-referencing of Scriptures for study. Do word studies. God used men to pen His Word. The source of the words was God. He gave those men words that they understood from their own individual vocabulary and their own experiences, and the finished writing was perfect, without error. It was the very Word of God. It was “God-breathed”. Every word, the very Word of God. The Bible does not ‘contain’ the Word of God, it ‘is’ the Word of God. It has the full authority of God Himself. It is His Word.]

-“But when that which is ______________ is come, then that which is in part shall be done away” (I Corinthians 13:10 ____). [NOTE: This is speaking of the completion of the written Word of God. It is perfect. When it was completely finished, with the writing of the book of Revelation, the last of the inspired Word of God, those temporary spiritual gifts were done away.] cf. James 1:25 ____ cf. James 2:12 ____ [Refers to the Scriptures as ‘the perfect law of liberty’ and ‘the law of liberty’.]

-“For the word of God is _________________, and ___________________, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of _________ and _____________, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the ___________” (Hebrews 4:12 ____). [The work ‘quick’ means ‘living’, ‘alive’.]

-It is important to hear the Word of God and then to “do” it and to “keep” it. Luke 6:46-49 ____ Luke 8:19-21____ Luke 11:27-28____ James 1:22____

-The attitude and the actions of the Bereans are a good example for us. “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they __________________ the word with all readiness of _____________, and _________________ the Scriptures ____________, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few” (Acts 17:10-12 ____). [NOTE: We are not to just accept what someone else tells us the Bible says. We are to search the Scriptures for ourselves to know what God says, not accept what a man says that God says.]

-It is important to study the Word of God. “Study to shew thyself approved unto __________, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, _______________ dividing the word of ___________” (II Timothy 2:15 ____). [NOTE: The word ‘study’ means to do this earnestly, diligently, laboring, to exert ones self. We are to diligently labor in studying the word of God. Yes, it does tire the flesh (cf. Ecclesiastes 12:12 ____].

-It is important to meditate on the Word of God. Joshua 1:7, 8 ____ Philippians 4:8____

-The Word of God is spiritual food for the child of God. It is like milk. It is like meat. It is where we get our spiritual nutrients and strength to develop and grow into mature children of God.

-We are to desire the Word of God. “As newborn babes, _________________ the sincere milk of the word, that ye may _____________ thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is _________________” (I Peter 2:2, 3 ____). [If a person has experienced the saving grace of the Lord, surely that person would desire to know what the Lord would want him to know. This is found in His Word. Illustration: A person (#1) who had a deep love and devotion for another person (#2). Person #1 found out that person (#2) had written a book about himself (#2) in which he revealed his history, his nature, his likes and dislikes and his very character in great depth. Not only does the book contain information about person #2, the writer, but also about the future of both persons. Wouldn’t person #1 have a great desire to read, study and meditate on that book? The Bible contains so much more for us than what is shown in this little illustration. God reveals to us Himself in His Word. He tells us where we came from, what our purpose is in life, and where we are going. He tells us how we can be saved, have life eternal and live life now more abundantly. He tells us how we can have unspeakable joy today. He tells us how to serve Him in a manner that He will be pleased with. He tells us about the judgment we will all face in the future. He gives us many examples of men and women who trusted Him and the kinds of lives they lived. He also gives examples of those who disobeyed Him and the consequences they faced. The Bible is not ‘a’ book, it is ‘THE’ book !

-“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of _________ which ye heard of us, ye received it ________ as the word of ________, but as it is in truth, the word of ______, which effectually worketh also in you that believe” (I Thessalonians 2:13 ____). [NOTE: God used men to pen His Word on paper, but the source of the words was God. It is not that ‘Paul said’, or ‘Peter said’, or ‘John said’, it is that ‘God said’.]

-We should have a desire to know the Lord personally and intimately. To do this we must be in His Word. “That I may know ________, and the power of His _______________, and the fellowship of His _________________, being made conformable unto His death;” (Philippians 3:10 ____).

-“Teaching them to observe ______ things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:20 ____). [NOTE: We must still have existing these “things” that the Lord commanded His church then in order for us to be able to teach them today. We do, His Word. He has preserved it.]

-“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy ___________ above all thy ___________” (Psalm 138:2 ____).

GOD’S WORD REVEALED, INSPIRED, PRESERVED AND ILLUMINATED

3. The one, true and living God is a personal triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal in divine perfection.

-“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the _______________ of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” ( Matthew 28:19 ____ ) [Note the singular ‘name’ and that three persons are given. Three persons of the Godhead, yet one name.]

Comments and Other References:

-God is a divine person, and can be known personally by mankind only through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is possible to know God as “My God”. “Personality may be defined as sentient (“having, or capable of, feeling or perception”) existence possessed of self- consciousness and the power of self-determination in view of moral ends.” God has the constituent elements of personality. He has intellect (power of thinking), sensibility (power of feeling) and volition (power of willing).[Outline Studies in Christian Doctrine George P. Pardington, p. 72] (Since He is the Creator of humanity which He made in His own likeness and image, and humanity is composed of people having personalities, then it is only logical that God is a person with personality. God’s personality is perfect. He is the perfect person.)

-The word ‘Trinity’ means ‘threefold’. The one true and living God “exists and manifests Himself in a threefold way – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For want of a better term, we speak of the three persons in the Godhead. These three are one in essence (being) but distinct in personality” [ These Things We Believe J. Clyde Turner p. 25 ].

-“The Father sends the Son, the Son reveals the Father, and the Holy Spirit enables men to apprehend the Father as revealed in the Son" [ Christian Doctrine W. T. Conner p. 122 ].

-Each person of the Godhead is fully God. Each One has all the attributes of perfection ascribed to God in the Scriptures. In this sense each person of the Godhead is equal.

-“In the beginning __________ created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 ____). [The word translated ‘God’ is Elohim. This word is a plural noun, but it is used with a singular verb. Thus, in the first verse of the Bible there is the Trinity and the Unity of God. One God, One in essence, manifesting Himself in three distinct persons.]

-“And God said, Let _________ make man in _____________image, after ____________ likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1: 26 ____).

-“So God created man in ____________ ____________ image, in the image of ____________ created He him; male and female created He them” (Genesis 1:27 ____). [This verse makes it very clear that the “us” and “our” in verse 26 is God. He is revealing Himself to mankind as a Triune being in His Word.]

-“For there are _______________ that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are _____________” (I John 5:7 ____). [The ‘Word’ is the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. cf. John 1:1-3, 14____]

-Concerning I John 5:7, many will wrongly say that it should not be in the Bible, that it was added. But, “There is Suitable Evidence For The Authenticity Of This Passage:
It is:
a. Found in the Latin Vulgate, thus in a great many Latin manuscripts.
b. Found in 61, the Montfort Manuscript.
c. Found in Codex Ravianus (88 and 629).
d. Found in Speculum (m)
e. Found in r. (Old Latin, 5th Cent. A.D.)
f. Cited by Tertullian (160-230 A.D.)
g. Cited by Cyprian (200-258 A.D.)
h. Quoted by Priscillian (d. 385)
i. Quoted by Cassiodorus (480-570 A.D.)
j. Used by several African Latin writers to defend the doctrine of the Trinity against Arian Vandals, 5th Century A.D.”
[“Landmarks of Baptist Doctrine” Robert J. Sargent Vol. 1 p. 121]

- “And _____________, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the ________________of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved ____________, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16,17 ____). [NOTE: The Son is being Scripturally baptized, the Spirit descends upon Him, the Father speaks from heaven. The three persons of the Godhead are present.]

THE TRINITY OF GOD:
-The Father is God. “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from ____________ our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:7 ____).

-The Son is God. “But unto the _________He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom” (Hebrews 1:8 ____). [NOTE: This is God the Father Himself that speaks and addresses His Son, Jesus Christ, as God.]

-The Holy Spirit is God. “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the ______________ ________________, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto __________” (Acts 5:3, 4 ____).

THE UNITY OF GOD:
-There is only one God.

-“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is __________ LORD:” (Deuteronomy 6:4 ____).

-“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is ______God” (Isaiah 44:6 ____).

- “For there is one ___________, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” (I Timothy 2:5 ____).

-The truth of the Trinity of the Godhead is one of those truths that is clearly taught in the Scriptures and yet is incomprehensible by the human finite mind. God is infinitely greater than man. We are very thankful to the Lord for revealing so much about Himself to us in His Word. “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very ______________; thou art clothed with honour and majesty” (Psalm 104:1 ____).

4. The Genesis account of Creation is literal, accurate and true.

-Genesis 1 ____
-Genesis 2 ____
Comments and Other References:

-Since the Word of God is true and accurate in every detail (see Doctrinal Statement No. 2) we believe the details concerning creation exactly as given in the Word of God. In the Bible God informs mankind where man, the earth, the heavens, plants, animals, birds, fishes, insects, all living substances and all things that exist came from. God created and made all things. All that exists, except God Himself, came from that which God created, made and formed. God is self-existent. He is. God was not born, not created, nor was He made. God is from everlasting to everlasting.

-“In the beginning God ___________________ the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1____).

-“And God said, Let there be ______________: and there was ____________” (Genesis 1:3____).

-“And God said, Let there be a ___________________in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters” (Genesis 1:6____).

- “And God called the firmament _________________. And the evening and the morning were the second day” (Genesis 1:8____).

-“And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the ______________ land appear: and it was so” (Genesis 1:9____).

-“And God said, Let the earth bring forth _______________, the ________________ yielding seed, and the ________________ tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so” (Genesis 1:11____).

-“And God said, Let there be ________________ in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:” (Genesis 1:14____).

-“And God made two great lights; the _________________light to rule the day, and the ________________ light to rule the night: He made the _______________ also” (Genesis 1:16____).

-“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving ________________ that hath life, and _____________ that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven” (Genesis 1:20____).

-“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, __________________, and _____________________ thing, and_________________ of the earth after his kind: and it was so” (Genesis 1:24____).

-“And God said, Let us make ___________ in our ______________, after our ________________: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26____).

“Thus the heavens and the earth were ___________________, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God _________________ and ______________” (Genesis 2:1-3____).

(God rested, not because He was tired, but because His work of creation was finished.)

-List what God created and made on the following Days of Creation:
Day 1:______________________________ Day 4:_______________________________

Day 2:______________________________ Day 5:_______________________________

Day 3:______________________________ Day 6:_______________________________

Day 7:____________________________________________________________________

-In these 6 days (each one a literal 24-hour day) God created and made all that exists (with God Himself being the only exception. God was not created, made, formed nor born. He is!).

-There was no “Big Bang”. There has never been any “Evolution”. Yes, God has enabled various species to adapt (Adaptation) to circumstances or situations. (If a person walks barefooted the skin on their feet thickens.) There have been mutations (with defects; deformities; can be caused by exposure to chemicals, radiation, drugs, etc.). But these are still the same species. There have been new breeds of animals within a particular species, but the new breeds are always the same species. A cat can never become anything except a cat.

-Man is NOT an animal. Man is the only creature made in the image and likeness of God.

-“Even every one that is called by my name: for I have ________________ him for my glory, I have ________________ him; yea, I have _________________ him” (Isaiah 43:7 ____).

- “For thus saith the LORD that ________________ the heavens; God Himself that _________________ the earth and ________________ it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:18____). [NOTE: God has made this earth for man to dwell on. We have just the right amount of oxygen and other elements for our existence. We have water here. This earth is just the right distance from the sun for our existence.]

-“Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise Him in the heights. Praise ye Him, all His angels: praise ye Him, all His hosts. Praise ye Him, sun and moon: praise Him, all ye stars of light. Praise Him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD: for He ________________________, and they were ________________” (Psalm 148:1-5____).

-“In the beginning was the __________, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. ______ things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1-3____). [Jesus is the Word. He is God and He was made flesh (John 1:14____).]

-“For by Him were all things ________________, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: _________ things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things _______________” (Colossians 1:16, 17____). [NOTE: Jesus is the Creator of all things and He keeps His creation ‘going’, He sustains it. Hebrews 1:3 ____ Jesus is upholding all things by the “.. ________ of His ________,..”]

-Sinful man does not want to admit that the God of the Bible is real. Sinful man does not want to admit his sin and admit that he is accountable to his Creator. Man thus has invented lies to attempt to explain creation without a Creator and help him feel better. This does not change the truth. The Big Bang is a LIE. Evolution is a LIE.

-“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be _________, they became _______________, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the ___________________ more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen” (Romans 1:21-25____).
[NOTE: The humanists, that this describes, believe that serving mankind is the greatest good and the goal of man. This is not true. The truth is we should always seek to serve God, our Creator.]

-“Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God: Which ______________ heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:” (Psalm 146:5, 6____).

-The devil will do what he can to promote lies to cause people to not believe the Word of God. He is doing this through textbooks, using some teachers in public schools and some professors in colleges and universities. Some of these foolish liars have degrees and post-graduate degrees from distinguished schools. But a liar is a liar. Don’t be deceived. God’s Word is truth. It is reliable and accurate. You can always depend on the Bible. It is the very Word of God.

-If everyone on the earth believes in the big bang and evolution, these are still lies. The majority of people believing a lie does not change the truth of the holy Scriptures. The wise thing to do is to believe God and what He tells us in the Bible.

-God made mankind for His honor and glory. Are you living and serving Him in such a way as to honor Him? Have you received Jesus as your personal Saviour? Are you a faithful member of a Scriptural New Testament church?

5. Satan is a fallen angel, the archenemy of God and man, the unholy god of this world, and his final destiny is the eternal lake of fire and brimstone.

- “How art thou fallen from heaven, O ___________________, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, ___ will ascend into heaven, ___ will exalt my throne above the stars of God: ___ will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: ___ will ascend above the heights of the clouds; ___ will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to ___________, to the sides of the pit” (Isaiah 14:12- 15____).

-“Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of ________________, and perfect in _______________. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed _______________ that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more” (Ezekiel 28:11-19____).

- “Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the _____________ and his ______________:” (Matthew 25:41____). [NOTE: Originally God made hell for the fallen, sinful angels. The devil was the first of these fallen creatures. Due to sin they fell from their fellowship with God.]

- “In whom the __________ of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (II Corinthians 4:4____). [NOTE: The devil is the god, leader, of this sinful worldly system upon this earth.]

-“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the ______________ of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with ________________, and having on the breastplate of _______________________; And your feet shod with the preparation of the _______________ of peace; Above all, taking the shield of _______________, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of ______________________, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the __________________ of God:” (Ephesians 6:10-17____). [NOTE: The only offensive weapon the child of God has against the devil is the sword, God’s Word.]

- “And the devil that ___________________ them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10____). [NOTE: This tells of the final, eternal place of existence, and the final, eternal condition the devil will exist in.]

-The devil is a real, literal, living being. He is not just an evil power, he is a living creature, a fallen, sinful angel.

-God did not create Lucifer as an evil angel. God did however give him and all angels a choice. Lucifer lifted himself up in pride against God, which is sin. This is where sin originated. It originated in Lucifer. He then became the devil.

1. Disappointment
2. Discouragement
3. Despair
4. Doubt
5. Disbelief
6. Distraction
7. Doublemindedness
8. Dishonesty

14. Defilement

16. Disobedience
-The devil imitates God. Satan has his ‘churches’ (they are not necessarily called ‘Satanic’), his bibles (they probably will have the word ‘Holy’ on them), his ministers (appear to be ministers of the Lord), his followers (most would deny they are following the devil), his doctrines (half-truths; perverted Scriptures; used for man’s gain).

-Consider what is called baptism by some (sprinkling, pouring).

-Consider what is called the Lord’s Supper by some (perverted in every way)

-Consider what is taught and preached by some (salvation by works; charismatic

movement; women ‘preachers’; ecumenical movement; not preaching repentance for salvation; universal church; denominational salvation, etc.)

-Consider the confusion all the different translations and versions of bibles have on some. (Adding to, taking away from, and changing the Word of God.)

-Consider he will have his Antichrist (a false Christ), and already there are many antichrists.

-Consider the Antichrist as he imitates the true Christ (Revelation 6:2____). He will perhaps look like what people think that Jesus looks like, He will do things that people think that only God would do. He will sit and rule, temporarily, on the throne in Jerusalem. He will declare that he is God. He will deceive many.

-The devil is interested in the Lord’s churches (to hinder, discourage, divide and destroy). (Revelation 2:9,10,13,24____ 3:9____ in the letters to the 7 churches). The devil tempted Jesus. He tried to hinder the Apostles. “But He turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of ______________, but those that be of _____________” (Matthew 16:23____).

-“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the ___________________ of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure” (II Corinthians 12:7____). [NOTE: Things that come along in life the Lord wants to use to help His children, whereas the devil wants to use those same things to hinder, discourage and destroy.]

-The devil is very intelligent, cunning, sly, tricky (wiles). He knows the weaknesses of people.

-Always be on guard. The devil wants you to be disobedient and unfaithful to the Lord. The devil wants you to be unforgiving, to gossip, to lie, to not do what the Lord wants you to do. The devil wants you to lose you zeal toward God, His Word, His work and His church. The devil will give the person an excuse for not obeying the Lord, so the person will not feel too guilty. After a person is saved, the devil can do nothing to take away the persons salvation. He then begins to work on hindering that person’s testimony and service for Christ.

-“Neither give ___________ to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27____).

-“Submit yourselves therefore to God. _____________ the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. ..” (James 4:7, 8____).

- “Whom resist stedfast in the ______________, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world” (I Peter 5:9____).

6. The Scriptures teach the virgin birth and sinless humanity of Jesus Christ.

-“Now the ________________of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, __________________ they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the ______________ __________________” (Matthew 1:18-20 ____).

-“For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew ___________ sin; that we might be made the ________________________ of God in Him” (II Corinthians 5:21 ____).

-“Who ___________ no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth:” (I Peter 2:22 ____). [NOTE: This is speaking of Jesus (cf. vs. 21____). ]

I. THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST:
-Jesus was conceived and born of a virgin. This is a very important truth. If He was not virgin born, then He is not God, He has a sin nature, He is not the Saviour and the Bible is not true. The Bible is true. Jesus is God. He is the Saviour of the world.

- “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and _____________ seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel” (Genesis 3:15 ____). [NOTE: Jesus was born of the seed of woman and not of man. Jesus had no human biological father.]

-“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a __________________ shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14 ____). [NOTE: This is a prophecy of Jesus’ virgin birth. ‘Immanuel’ means ‘God with us’.]

-Luke 1:26-38 ____

- “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a __________________, made under the law,” (Galatians 4:4 ____)

-It was only through this marvelous plan of God that the eternal God the Son could be “made flesh”. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the virgin Mary. In this manner the Son of God could also now become the Son of Man. Since He had no earthly biological father, He was born without a sin nature. Jesus is unique. He is fully God and He is fully man.

Jesus alone is the God-man. Jesus is: the perfect God, the perfect man, the perfect sacrifice for man, the perfect Saviour, the perfect Mediator, the perfect High Priest, the perfect Judge, the perfect King, and the perfect ruler. Jesus is the perfect One.

-“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from _________________________” (Micah 5:2 ____ ). [NOTE: This is a prophecy concerning the place that the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would be born. He would be born in Bethlehem. Notice, as God the Son, He has always existed. It was when He was conceived in the womb of Mary that He was made flesh.]

II. THE SINLESS HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST
- “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet ________________ sin” (Hebrews 4:15 ____). [NOTE: Jesus is the great high priest for His children. Jesus is the only man to have never committed sin. He never committed even one sin.]

-“For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, ________________ from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for His own sins, and then for the people's: for this He did ___________, when He offered up Himself” (Hebrews 7:26,27 ____).

-“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But _________ the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without ________________and without _____________:” (I Peter 1:18, 19 ____ ).

-“And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is __________ sin” (I John 3:5 ____). [NOTE: This is speaking of Jesus Christ. There is no sin in Him.]

-Jesus was fully man. Physically, He got tired, hungry, thirsty and sleepy. He wept. He grew angry at sin and the hardness of people’s hearts. He could be grieved. He could feel pain, emotional and physical. He bled. He died a physical death.

-Jesus knows first hand the life experience of man upon this earth. He has experienced temptations, rejection, afflictions, mockery, sufferings of all sorts (mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically). Yet in all this, He never sinned! How we thank Him for who He is and what He has done! He conquered sin and death for all mankind. He makes it possible for a lost sinner to be saved, born of God, and to become a child of God.

-“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save ____________________; of whom I am chief” (I Timothy 1:15 ____ ).

- “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the ____________ Christ Jesus;” (I Timothy 2:5 ____). [NOTE: For the rest of eternity Jesus Christ will be a man. He will always be the God-man. He will always have a glorious body.]

-“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever ________________in Him should not perish, but have __________________ life” (John 3:16 ____ ). [NOTE: Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.]

-“For God sent _________ His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be ____________. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not _______________ in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:17, 18).

-There is no salvation without receiving Jesus as one’s Saviour. He is eternal life.

-There is no hope for any person, except that person receive the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and be born of God, a spiritual birth.

-"Jesus saith unto him, I am the _______, the ________, and the ________: no man cometh unto the Father, but by ______ " (John 14:6____).

7. The Scriptures teach the deity of Jesus Christ. He is the true and living God.

-“I and my Father are ____________” ( John 10:30 ____ ).

- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was _______________ God, and the Word ____________ God” ( John 1:1 ____ ).

-“And the Word was made ________________, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” ( John 1:14 ____ ).

-“To wit, that God was in _________________, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation” ( II Corinthians 5:19 ____ ). [NOTE: ‘To wit’: ‘namely’, ‘even as’.]

Comments and Other References:

-Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He is the eternal God the Son. It was at His conception in the womb of the virgin Mary that the Son of God was made flesh. At that point in time God the Son, who had always previously been Spirit, willingly took on Him the flesh of man. From that time God the Son would be forevermore fully Man while fully maintaining His deity as God.

-There are many Scriptural proofs that make it very clear that Jesus is the eternal God. We will give a few of these. After studying these passages there is no doubt, Jesus is God. God is one in essence and exists in three persons. “For there are ____________ that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are _________” ( I John 5:7 ____ ). [NOTE: Jesus is the Word. His life on earth was the expression to humanity of the person and character of the true and living God. His life, His spoken words, His deeds, His attitude were the very expression of God. He publicly manifested perfectly the person of God in His life. In this manner Jesus is the Word. Refer to Lesson Three.]

-There are those who believe that Jesus was a man but, erroniously, do not believe that He is God. Some say they believe He is the Son of God but, erroniously, say that He is not God. Some, erroniously, believe that Jesus is a created being by God. The truth is that Jesus is the Creator and that He is fully God and He was made to also be fully man. These false doctrines are of the devil and not of God. Jesus is NOT partly God, almost God, or a god, Jesus is fully the one true and living God!

-“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty ______________, The everlasting __________________, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 ____ ). [NOTE: If a person will not believe that Jesus is God, they are saying that God the Father is a liar and that the Scriptures are not true. The truth is that God can not lie.]

-There are many other comparisons proving that Jesus truly is Jehovah (LORD), God.

-Jesus has all the attributes and characteristics of God. He is holy, righteous, merciful, gracious, etc. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He is the only Saviour.

-Since Jesus is fully the one true and living God, it is very wise to accept Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and then to serve Him faithfully in one of His Scriptural true New Testament churches. It is wise to submit to Him in every aspect of our lives. It is wise to seek to honor Him with our lives. To honor God a person must honor the Lord Jesus Christ (John 5:23____).

-The only possible way to believe in the one, true and living God is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. cf. I Peter 1:21_____.

8. The Holy Spirit is the divine Administrator for Jesus Christ in His churches.

-“And, behold, ____ send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high” ( Luke 24:49 ____ ). [NOTE: Jesus is speaking to His New Testament church.]

-“And I will pray the _________________, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; Even the ______________ of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know ___________; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” ( John 14:16, 17 ____ ).

-“And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the _______________ of the Father, which, saith He, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy ________________ not many days hence” ( Acts 1:4, 5 ____ ).

-“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ________ shall be witnesses unto _________ both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” ( Acts 1:8 ____ ).

-“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were _______ with __________ accord in ___________ place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the ____________ ______________, and began to speak with other tongues, as the ______________ gave them utterance” ( Acts 2:1-4 ____ ).

Comments and Other References:
-On the first Day of Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ the church, which He had began during His earthly ministry, was empowered by the Lord. This empowerment that He gave was for the purpose that His churches could boldly be witnesses unto Jesus throughout this world. They were to be witnesses in a world that hates Jesus, truth, the Word of God and followers of Jesus. As we contrast the lives of the disciples before this Day of Pentecost and their lives after this Day we find that they were much more bold to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

-This Day of Pentecost was NOT when the Lord’s church began. His church was already in existence.

-The Lord’s church was baptized “with the Holy Spirit” on that Day. This was a one time baptism that is still valid today. Since all true New Testament churches have a direct lineage back to that first church, the baptism of that church with the Holy Spirit means that all true New Testament churchs today (and will until the rapture) have the benefit of that baptism. Each New Testament church has been empowered by the Holy Spirit.

-Individuals are not baptized with the Holy Spirit. The baptism was “with” the Holy Spirit and it was the Lord’s church body, as a body unit, that was baptized.

-To the New Testament church at Ephesus: “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the _____________ that worketh in _______, Unto Him be glory in the ______________ by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen” ( Ephesians 3:20, 21 ____ ). [NOTE: This empowerment with the Holy Spirit is not for the purpose of man’s glory, it is so that God will receive glory.]

-The Holy Spirit indwells every saved person (He seals him, He bears witness that he is His), but the empowerment by Him is in the Lord’s true New Testament churches. Again, this empowerment is so that churches will be witnesses unto Jesus and thus giving glory to God. This method and purpose is the Lord’s.

-The Holy Spirit is a divine person. He is deity. He is the true and living God. He is as much God as is the Father and as is the Son. Some false religions believe the Holy Spirit is only a power, which is not true. The truth is that the Word of God declares that the Holy Spirit is God. He is God the Holy Spirit. He is identified with the Father and the Son ( cf. Matthew 28:19 ____ I John 5:7 ____ ). [NOTE: See Lesson Three.]

-The Holy Spirit is eternal. “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the ______________ Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” ( Hebrews 9:14 ____ ).

-His personality is shown by: (A mere inanimate ‘power’ does not have these attributes.)

-He was involved in Jesus’ ministry: Matthew 3:16 ____ Matthew 4:1 ____ Luke 4:18 ____ Acts 1:2 ____ Acts 10:38 ____

-“But when the __________________ is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning” ( John 15:26, 27 ____ ). [NOTE: The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the One that we also are to bear witness unto in the world.]

-“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will ________________ you into all truth: for He shall _________ speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify ________: for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” ( John 16:13, 14 ____ ). [NOTE: The Holy Spirit does not speak of Himself, He speaks of Jesus. Those religious groups who emphasize the Holy Spirit are not led by the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the One who is to have the preeminence in all things. The Holy Spirit speaks of and glorifies Jesus.]

And _________________ will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17 _____). [NOTE: The Holy Spirit works through New Testament churches to extend the invitation to come to Jesus Christ for salvation.]

-The Holy Spirit is the giver of eternal life.
-“That which is born of the _______________ is flesh; and that which is born of the _________________ is spirit” (John 3:6 ____ ).
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and _________________of the Holy Ghost;” (Titus 3:5 ____ ).

-The Holy Spirit is the Author of the Word of God.
“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were ________________by the Holy Ghost” ( II Peter 1:21 ____ ).

-The Holy Spirit has empowered the true churches of the Lord Jesus Christ to be witnesses unto Jesus. He has saved every saved person. He indwells every child of God. As members of a New Testament church we were baptized in His name (including the Father and the Son). Now: He teaches His churches, He helps us, He leads us, He guides us, He convicts us, He has given us His Word. We depend upon the Holy Spirit in all that we do as a church. We continually stand in need of His divine help and guidance. He speaks and testifies of Jesus, so are we to do the same.

-Let us be thankful to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit for what they have done, are doing and will yet do.

-“The ____________ of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the ____________ of God, and the _________________ of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen” (II Corinthians 13:14 ____).

9. The miraculous spiritual manifestation gifts were done away when the Bible was completed. Faith, Hope and Love are the vital abiding Spiritual gifts.

-Read the chapters 12, 13 and 14 of I Corinthians: I Corinthians 12-14 ____ (Additional comments in Brackets [ ] )

-This Book was written to the New Testament church in Corinth (1:2) and is for all of Jesus’ true New Testament churches.

I Corinthians Chapter 12

1 Now concerning __________________ gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
[NOTE: At the time that the Apostle Paul was inspired of God to write to the New Testament church at Corinth members were given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit. These were given for specific purposes and different gifts were given to different church members. There seems to have been an abuse by some who wanted to experience the more outward dramatic, impressive, spectacular gifts. Some of these spiritual gifts have ceased since that time. The Lord did not want His churches to be ignorant concerning the subject of gifts that the Holy Spirit gave to members of New Testament churches. However, then as now, some will not hear and understand the truth. “But if any man be ignorant, let him be ______________” (I Corinthians 14:38 ____ ).]

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, ___________ away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
[NOTE: These were unlearned as far as speaking foreign languages.]

3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same _________________.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same ________________.
[NOTE: Administration = ministries, service; “The opportunities for service in the church which enable exercise of the motivation”; the purpose to be serving the Lord in His church to help others spiritually. Every member has a job to be doing to help this church in carrying out its tasks.]

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same __________ which worketh all in all.
[NOTE: ‘operations’ refers to workings or energy; the energy the Spirit furnishes to accomplish the service; In these last 3 verses, we see the Trinity.]

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to ________________ withal.

8 For to ______________ is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to __________________ the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another _______________ by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as ______________ will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
[NOTE: “are we all baptized” – Scriptural water baptism of a child of God “into one body” – church membership
“whether we be Jews or Gentiles” – no racial distinction
“whether we be bond or free” – no class distinction
(“Landmarks of Baptist Doctrine” – Robert Sargent) ]

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the ______________, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
[NOTE: Just because someone says something that does not make it true. In these verses we see the logical need for diversity of functions in the church.]

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the __________, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God ____________ the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him.

19 And if they were all one _________________, where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more _________________, are necessary:

23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

26 And whether one member suffer, ________ the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in __________________.

28 And God hath ___________ some in the church, first _______________, secondarily ____________________, thirdly ____________________, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

31 But covet earnestly the _________________gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

I Corinthians Chapter 13 (known as the ‘love’ chapter of the Bible)

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not __________________, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
[NOTE: This one would be just a noise maker.]

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am ___________________.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me __________________.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall _____________; whether there be tongues, they shall _________________; whether there be knowledge, it shall _______________ away.

9 For we know in _____________, and we prophesy in ________________.

10 But ______________ that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

[NOTE: Over 1900 years ago God was already telling His churches that the gift of prophecy shall fail, the gift of tongues shall cease, the gift of knowledge shall vanish away. We are told when this would happen, “when that which is perfect is come”. Some say that this means when Jesus comes. This is not correct. Jesus had already come, lived a sinless life, was crucified, was buried, was raised from the dead with a new glorious body and had ascended back into heaven. He is perfect, He could become no more perfect, and He had already come. Actually, “that which is perfect” refers to the completion of the Word of God. When the Scriptures were fully given by the Lord then these temporary spiritual gifts would cease. Consider James 1:25____”the perfect law of liberty”. According to this verse the perfect law of liberty must by something that a person can look into and continue in obedience to it. Clearly, ‘the perfect law of liberty’ is the Word of God (James 1:18,21,22____) (see also James 2:12____). When the Word of God, given by inspiration of God, was completed by the giving of the final book of Revelation, then these temporary spiritual gifts ceased. Since the Word of God was completed, now a person can fully know how to be saved, how to serve the Lord, how to prepare for the Judgment Seat of Christ, how to face temptations, how to handle all problems, how to distinguish false teachers/preachers from true teachers/preachers, how to determine if a certain teaching is true or not and to be able to “try the spirits whether they are of God” (I John 4:1____). In other words, the completed Word of God (the 66 Books of the Bible) would be totally sufficient “That the man of God may be perfect, _____________ furnished unto all good works” (II Timothy 3:17____).]

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
[NOTE: When the church was in its infancy those temporary sign gifts were helpful in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In some cases miracles were performed to verify that the messenger and the message was from a man of God. But as the churches became more established doctrinally and when the Scriptures were fully completed then those temporary gifts were done away with since the Lord did not need them any longer. They were to study and to search the Scriptures, which were now fully given, nothing lacking. This was likened unto a person growing up and putting away childish things (I Corinthians 13:11____). [See also I Corinthians 14:20____); See I Kings 17:24 ____ for a clear Scriptural purpose of God’s miracles during the days of the Old Testament.]

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but _______________ face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is __________________.
[NOTE: The best spiritual gifts: Faith, hope and charity. The greatest of these is charity. This makes it very clear. The total number of abiding Spiritual gifts is given, and then they are listed. There are no other abiding Spiritual gifts besides these three, since the day that the Book of Revelation was completed.]

I Corinthians Chapter 14

1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto _____________, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to ___________________, and exhortation, and comfort.

4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth _______________; but he that prophesieth edifieth the __________________.

5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for ________________ is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? [NOTE: Distinction: clear, understandable.]

8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
[NOTE: If speak in a language that people can not understand there is no real value to it.]

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
[NOTE: A barbarian would be like a foreigner, a heathen and there would be no communication between these two.]

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, _______________ that ye may excel to the edifying of the ___________________.
[NOTE: Even when the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to speak in an unlearned language, it was still better to speak in a language the church understood so that they could be built us spiritually. Cf. vs 4____]

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
[NOTE: The Apostle Paul could speak several languages, perhaps Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Aramaic and others.]

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak _______________ words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten _________________ words in an unknown tongue.
[NOTE: It is so much better to speak in a language that the people understand that in one that they can not.]

20 Brethren, be not _________________ in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
[NOTE: cf. I Corinthians 13:11 referring to these temporary sign gifts. We are not to be childish in understanding, but we are to be child-like when it comes to malice, be quick to forgive.]

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. [NOTE: Many will not believe the truth from the Lord regarding these temporary sign gifts.]

22 Wherefore tongues are for a ______________, not to them that believe, but to them that believe _____________: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
[NOTE: The gift from the Holy Spirit was one of the temporary sign gifts that was done away with when the Scriptures were completed.]

23 If therefore the ________________ church be come together into ____________ place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
[NOTE: This would be a chaotic, disorderly gathering and certainly not one that worships the Lord.]

24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
[NOTE: How much better it is if the Word of God is presented in the Lord’s churches. Cf. Colossians 3:16___ .]

25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto __________________.

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by _________________, and that by __________________; and let one interpret.
[NOTE: In any one church service if there were members that had been given the gift of speaking in tongues it was to be very orderly. One stand up and speak, then when he is finished another could stand and speak, and at the most three would do this. It was to be very orderly. There must be one there that can interpret that language or the people were not to speak.]

28 But if there be ____________ interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
[NOTE: God gave specific guidelines to church members for the use of this spiritual gift. Again, today since the Scriptures have been completed this sign gift is not given to anyone by the Holy Spirit.]

29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 And the spirits of the prophets are ________________ to the prophets.
[NOTE: God’s true prophets never loose control of themselves, behaving in such a manner that they do not know what they are doing or saying. ]

33 For God is ________ the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34 Let your women keep _________________ in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
[NOTE: The context continues to be these spiritual gifts, especially the speaking in an unlearned tongue. It was never to be the women who spoke in an unlearned tongue. Evidently, God did not give them this gift.]

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the ________________________of the Lord.
[NOTE: These things are not just Paul’s opinion they are commandments of God.]

38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
[NOTE: Some will never accept the truth of the Word of God and will continue to believe that the gift of tongues still exists.]

39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40 Let all things be done ____________________ and in ________________.

Comments and Other References:

-The Lord deals with people differently at different times. An example of this is that no one is under the Law of Moses any longer. The nation of Israel was under the Law for about 1500 years, but when Jesus died on the cross the Law was fulfilled and done away with.

-There were some spiritual gifts that the Lord gave unto His early church that have since been done away with.

-The word unknown is italicized in the Scriptures. This indicates that it was inserted by translators to give the proper sense of the meaning of a passage. What they spoke in an ‘unknown’ tongue they were speaking in an existing language or dialect, never the gibberish that is called ‘speaking in tongues’ today. It was an unlearned language or dialect by the one speaking.

-It is never recorded that Jesus spoke in an unknown tongue.

-Speaking in tongues is not referred to in Scriptures after the book of I Corinthians.

-Acts 2:1-11____

-God can do all things, but He can never do anything that is contrary to His word. If He says that these sign gifts that He gave have ceased, then they have ceased. He can make no exceptions.

-We must always remember that the devil is an imitator of the Lord. There are imitation bibles, imitation churches, imitation miracles, imitation spiritual gifts, imitation preachers, etc.
In some places the tactics of the devil include great persecution. Here in the United States at this present time his tactics include “complacency and compromise”. As heard once on a radio program a preacher came from a foreign country to the United States. In his home country he faced terrible persecution. The result was fear in many people there. After he stayed a while in the United States he was so saddened and had a desire to go back to his home country. What he saw here was even worse (the complacency and the compromise in Christianity) than the persecution in his home country. Let’s don’t be part of either one. Let us never compromise the truths of God’s Word no matter how unpopular they become. Let us never be complacent in doing the work that the Lord has called us to do.

10. Man was created in the image of God and lived in innocency until he fell by voluntary transgression from his sinless state, the result being that all mankind are sinners.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the __________, and a tree to be desired to make one _____________, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they ________________ that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made ___________________ aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife __________ themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
[NOTE: They had never hidden themselves from God before, but had been in fellowship with Him.]

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was ________________, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
[NOTE: They had never been afraid of God before their sin.]

11 And He said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom __________ gavest to be with me, __________ gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
[NOTE: Adam attempts to shift the blame, partially to the Lord for giving the woman to him and partially to the woman. The truth is each one is guilty and accountable for his own sin.]

13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The _________________beguiled me, and I did eat.
[NOTE: Notice, she also attempts to shift the blame. The effect of sin is already being seen.]

14 And the LORD God said unto the ________________, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy ______________, and thou shalt bruise his ______________.
[NOTE: ‘thy seed’ are children of the devil; ‘her seed’ is the Lord Jesus Christ; the devil will be destroyed by the Lord. To bruise the heel is minor compared to bruising the head which is deadly. This is considered to be the first prophecy of the coming Saviour.]

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in ______________ thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam He said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for _________ sake; in _________________ shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 ___________ also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the _____________ of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20 And Adam called his wife's name __________; because she was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of ______________, and clothed them.
[NOTE: The first blood shed on the earth was when the LORD took the life of an animal (lamb?) and made clothing for Adam and Eve. This pictures the provision of salvation that the Lord provides through Jesus Christ. It was through Jesus’ suffering death and His shed blood that salvation is offered to sinful mankind. Jesus is “..the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29____).]

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of _______, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ________________ from whence he was taken.

24 So He drove out the man; and He placed at the ______________ of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming ________________ which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

-“Wherefore, as by _____________ man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that ____________ have sinned:” ( Romans 5:12 ____ ).
[NOTE: Sin entered into the human race by Adam.]

-“For as by one man's disobedience many were made _________________, so by the obedience of __________ shall many be made righteous” ( Romans 5:19 ____ ).
[NOTE: The disobedience was that of Adam; the obedience was that of Jesus Christ.]

-All people are created beings. Man was created in the image and likeness of the one, true and living God.

-God gave man the ability to make choices. The first man, Adam, rebelled and disobeyed God. He died spiritually the very moment the sin was committed. At some later date he died physically. Remember, death means ‘separation’. -This nature of sin was passed down to his children. The result is that all people that have man as father are born with a nature of sin. The wages of sin is death. All people need to really understand this. WE ARE GUILTY of sinning against God! There are terrible consequences to this. [NOTE: Jesus had no human, biological father, thus He was born without a sin nature. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit.]

-We are sinners by birth and yet we sin by choice.

-We would have no hope if God had not loved us and if Jesus had not come and died for us and rose again from the dead.

-What man has lost in Adam can be gained back through Jesus Christ. God wants us to be more and more like His Son. “For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the _______________ of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren” ( Romans 8:29 ____ ).

[NOTE: Death refers to separation. Physical death is separation of the soul and spirit from the body. Spiritual death is the separation between a lost person and the Lord. We all deserve this eternal death, but by the grace of God, when a person receives the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour, God gives that person His gift of eternal life.]

-Sinner, receive Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and He will give you the gift of eternal life. Then share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with other sinners so that they might be saved.

-“And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the _______________ world” ( I John 2:2 ____ ).
[NOTE:‘Propitiation’ = “..It is God who is "propitiated" by the vindication of His holy and righteous character, whereby through the provision He has made in the vicarious and expiatory sacrifice of Christ, He has so dealt with sin that He can show mercy to the believing sinner in the removal of his guilt and the remission of his sins. … The expiatory work of the Cross is therefore the means whereby the barrier which sin interposes between God and man is broken down. By the giving up of His sinless life sacrificially, Christ annuls the power of sin to separate between God and the believer.” (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words); “..God demands that the payment for sin be made once and for all. It is Christ Himself, therefore who become hilasmos (‘propitiation’), the means which is acceptable to God to satisfy His righteousness or His justice.” (“The Complete Word Study Dictionary” – Zodhiates p. 770). ‘Vicarious’ = substitutionary; take another’s place; ‘expiatory’ = to pay the penalty; ‘propitiation’ = satisfaction]

Comments and Other References:

-This Statement has several facts that we believe. Jesus’ suffering and death was for every person that has, is or ever will be conceived by man. He suffered for us. He died for us. He is our substitute. Only those who repent toward God, believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask God for forgiveness will benefit from the sacrifice that Jesus offered. Those who reject Jesus as their personal Saviour, and die in that condition, will forever be separated from God and will be in hell in torments.

-Notice, in so many Scriptures what Jesus has done “for us”. He took our place. We all deserve the suffering that Jesus went through. But He did that for us.

(A). Jesus suffered. ( See Hebrews 2:9 and I Peter 3:18 above)
-“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also ________________ for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps:” ( I Peter 2:21 ____ ).
[NOTE:Jesus suffered emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. He suffered in every way possible for mankind. We can not possibly even come close to knowing the depths of suffering Jesus endured. The punishments of all the sins of all the people were carried out again Him. “The fiery judgment of God against sin raged at Calvary. God the Father spared not His Son. It was no make-believe. The wrath of God again sin was spent on Jesus Christ.” Christ is the Answer Paul Goodwin p. 19]

-“For He hath made Him to be ____________ for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” ( II Corinthians 5:21 ____ ).
[NOTE: He, God the Father, made Him, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be sin for us,…]

-“Forasmuch then as Christ hath ___________________ for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same _______________: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God” ( I Peter 4:1,2 ____ ). -“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a _____________ for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” (Galatians 3:13 ___ ).
[NOTE: “it is written” in Deuteronomy 21:23____ ].

(B). Jesus died. (See Hebrews 2:9 above)
-“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the _______________” ( Romans 5:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: Every person is included in the ‘ungodly’.]

-“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, ________________ died for us” ( Romans 5:8 ____ ).

- “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an ________________ and a ________________ to God for a sweetsmelling savour” ( Ephesians 5:2 ____ ).
[NOTE: The ‘sweetsmelling savour’ indicates that the Father was wellpleased and satisfied with His Son’s sacrifice for sins.]

-“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our __________ according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: And that He was _____________ ..” ( I Corinthians 15:3 - 5a ____ )
[NOTE: This is the Gospel, “Good News” of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection and His being seen by trustworthy disciples who bare witness of Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus’ resurrection will be studied in a later Lesson.]

-“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who ____________ for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him” ( I Thessalonians 5:9, 10 ____ ).

-“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His ______________ for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” ( I John 3:16 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus suffered and died willingly for mankind. “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father” (John 10:17, 18 ____ ). The cross did not take His life, He GAVE His life. The cross was the manner that Jesus chose to use to die for our sins. Jesus’ shed blood: Ephesians 1:7___ I Peter 1:18, 19___ Revelation 1:5___ ].

(C). Jesus’ suffering and death was for all people. He did not just die for certain races or nationalities of people. He did not die for just one of the genders. Jesus died for every sinner, and that means He died for every person. He died for the Jew and the Gentile. He died for Americans, He died for the Filipinos, He died for Africans, He died for Indians, He died for the Chinese and He died for every one else also. There is no difference.
-“What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are ___________ under sin; As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: .. Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Romans 3:9, 10, 24____).
[NOTE: Every person has a lineage back to the same father in the flesh, Adam.]

-There are those who claim that Jesus only died for certain people and that He did not die for all the others. They claim He died only for the “elect”. This is the FALSE doctrine of Calvinism, Hardshellism, Presbyterianism, etc. Their doctrine is called TULIP. This is what that acronym stands for: (Remember, this doctrine is NOT the truth!)
T – Total Depravity
U – Unconditional Election
L – Limited Atonement
I – Irresistible Grace
P - Perseverance

-See Hebrew 2:9 above (Jesus experienced death for every human being).

-Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw _______ men unto me” ( John 12:32 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus was lifted up from the earth on the cross. ]

-“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to _______________:” ( Acts 17:30 ____ )
[NOTE: Would God command all men to repent if all men could not be saved? No. Everyone COULD be saved. ]

-“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who ____________ have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave Himself a ransom for ___________, to be testified in due time” ( I Timothy 2:3-6 ___).
[NOTE: The Calvinist would say the Jesus gave Himself a ransom for all ‘the elect’. That is not true. Jesus gave Himself a ransom for everyone. ]

-The truth is that Jesus suffered and died for every human being. That is why the Scriptures use the word “whosoever”.

-“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that ___________________ believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the ______________ through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16 – 18 ____ ).
[NOTE: vs. 18 tells the one reason why people go into hell and not heaven.]

-“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be ______________” (Romans 10:13 ____ ).

-Compare John 3:14, 15____with Numbers 21:8,9____ . This is a comparison of Jesus on the cross being offered to save mankind with Moses and the brazen serpent on a pole that the Lord commanded him to make. Notice in verse 8, “every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it , shall live.” In verse 9, “any man… he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” Any person ‘bitten’ with the deadly disease of sin (and we all are) can look to Jesus on the cross in faith and that person will live (eternal life). There is no such thing as Jesus just dying for certain people. He died for every individual person, with no exceptions!

-“For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for ___________, then were _________ dead: And that He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again” ( II Corinthians 5:14, 15 ____ ).
[NOTE: Follow some logic in this verse. All men naturally are sinners and are spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1____), all are dead. Thus, it is evident that it is for all sinners that Jesus died for, since all were dead. Jesus did not die for just a certain group of people, but for all people.]

-Yet even though Jesus has suffered and died for every individual person, no one is saved automatically. Each individual must himself/herself repent toward God, believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ, believe on Him and then pray and ask the Lord for His mercy, His forgiveness and His salvation. This involves the free will of man. It is a choice that every person makes. Every person who comes to the age of accountability (or ‘point of accountability’) makes a choice either to receive Jesus as personal Saviour or to reject Jesus as personal Saviour.

-“He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth ___________ is condemned already, because he hath not ____________________ in the name of the only begotten Son of God” ( John 3:18 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is the one reason why people will die and go into hell, they never believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thus were never saved.]

-Jesus stated, “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe __________that I am He, ye shall die in your sins” ( John 8:24 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus said that He was ‘from above’ (John 8:23___). To be saved, a person must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, the Saviour of the world.]

-“For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that ________________” ( I Timothy 4:10 ____ ).
[NOTE: All people could be saved, but only those that believe the gospel of Christ and believe upon Him will actually be saved. This believing upon the Lord Jesus Christ involves faith and trust in Him.]

-“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of __________, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the ________ Jesus, and shalt believe in thine __________ that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man ______________ unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him. For whosoever shall _______ upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:8-13 ____ ).

-God’s gift of eternal life has been bought and paid for. (By the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.)

-God’s gift of eternal life is offered. (Offered freely to any and all.)

-God’s gift of eternal life must be received by the individual. (Before it is any benefit to him/her.)

-God’s gift of eternal life must be accepted, and it must be accepted on God’s terms. From the heart:
-There must be repentance toward God.
-There must be belief of the gospel of Christ and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
-There must be prayer asking the Lord for His mercy, forgiveness and salvation.

-“Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21 ____ ).

-This verse, Acts 20:21, tells to whom the gospel is to be presented to (Jews and Greeks, thus, every human being) and what was testified to them concering what each individual must do in order to be saved (repent toward God and have faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.) Also, a person must pray and call upon the name of the Lord as given above in Romans 10:13.

12. The Scriptures teach a literal bodily resurrection and ascension of Christ and the bodily resurrection of His saints.

-“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for He is ________________, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead; and, behold, He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye ____________ Him: lo, I have told you” ( Matthew 28:1-7 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus had previously told the disciples that after He was risen He would meet them in Galilee (Matthew 26:32 ____; Mark 14:28 ____).]

-“And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this _______________ Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in ____________ manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven” ( Acts 1:9-11 ____ ).
[NOTE: He ascended: from the Mt. of Olives, personally (it was Jesus Himself), bodily, visibly, received in a cloud, ascended into heaven. When Jesus comes back again to this earth (not the rapture): He is coming back to this earth to the Mt. of Olives, personally, bodily, visibly, coming from heaven.]

-“So also is the resurrection of the dead.
It is sown in corruption; it is raised in ____________________:
It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in ________________:
it is sown in weakness; it is raised in __________________:
It is sown a natural body; it is raised a __________________ body.
There is a natural body, and there is a __________________ body.
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not ___________ which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, _________________: [NOTE: the first KIND of man.] the second man is the Lord from _________________. [NOTE: the second KIND of man, a man without any sin.] As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the ____________________. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and ______________ cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be ____________________, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised _____________________, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on _____________________, and this mortal must put on _______________________. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in __________________. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to _____________, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye __________________, unmoveable, always ____________________ in the _______________ of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in ______________in the Lord” ( I Corinthians 15:42-58 ____ ).

[NOTE: “moment” = atomo “indivisible; when referring to time it means an indivisible point of time, an instant” (Zodhiates, p. 286); "the smallest possible portion” (Bullinger, p. 504); “twinkling” = “a wink, a movement of the eyelid” (Bullinger, p. 826); “a quick motion. In the NT a blink of the eye” (Zodhiates, p. 1263); “incorruption” = the resurrected glorified body will not be subject to the kind of deterioration as the present body is; “immortality” = the resurrected glorified body will never die. In that glorified body there will be no sin and no death. A ‘mystery’ in the Bible speaks of a Biblical truth that has not previously been explained.]

-“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring ____________ Him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a _______________, with the voice of the ______________________, and with the _________________ of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise ________________.: ________________ we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ________________ be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words” (I Thessalonians 4:13 -18 ____ ).
[NOTE: “prevent” = “to anticipate, precede” (Zodhiates, p.1441); this passage is dealing with the rapture. The archangel is Michael cf. Jude 9____ .]

[NOTE: This passage is speaking about physical death and then spiritual death. The saved person who dies a physical death will one day have his body raised and changed into a glorious body. The saved person will never die spiritually, will never be separated from God.]

-Job 19:23-27 ____

-Psalm 17:15 ____

13. The Scriptures teach a premillennial, personal, bodily return of Christ to this earth as the crowning event of this present church age. He will establish His everlasting Kingdom and rule one thousand years on the earth, Christ’s millennial reign, prior to the creation of the new heavens and the new earth. After Jesus’ one thousand year reign on this earth there will be the resurrection of the unrighteous unto eternal punishment in the lake of fire and all of children of God shall enter into the eternal ages and will be with the Lord.

-”Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a ______________ for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto _________________; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, ____ _______ the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by _________” ( John 14:1 – 6 ____ ).

-“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so ___________ also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord ________________ shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in ________________ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up _________________ with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words” (I Thessalonians 4:13 – 18 ____ ).

-“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall ________________ with the spirit of His mouth, and shall ________________ with the brightness of His coming:” II Thessalonians 2:8 ____ ).
[NOTE: The ‘Wicked’ is the Antichrist; he will be destroyed when Jesus comes to this earth in His glory.]

-Revelation 19 ____

-“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the _____________ of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were ______________________. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the _____________ death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4 – 6 ___ ).
[ NOTE: The ‘second death’ is the eternal separation of a lost person from God. This separation involves the lost person’s soul and resurrected body united together and cast into the lake of fire (cf. Revelation 20:14____). ]

“And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the ______________ were opened: and another __________ was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and ______________ and ___________ delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:11 – 15 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is the Great White Throne Judgment of lost people. ‘Death’ speaks of the body; ‘Hell’ speaks of the soul. The body and the soul of every lost person will be reunited and then cast into the lake of fire. The ‘books’ refer to the books of the Bible and/or books which are records of the works of the individual. God is keeping a detailed record of what people say, do, think, their motives, etc. ]

-“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with __________ and ___________________: which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8 ____ ).

Comments and Other References:

-Jesus’ Second Coming: (This is presented in the Scriptures as occuring in two Phases) (1.) Rapture: Jesus comes in the air and does not come to the earth. The world will not see Him. This takes place in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. The souls of the saved that have left this life prior to this time will come back with Jesus. Their bodies will be raised and gloriously changed and their souls will be reunited with their bodies. The living saved at that time will be gloriously changed. All of the saved will then go up together to meet the Lord and be with Him forever. It is perhaps at this time that the Judgment Seat of Christ takes place in heaven and eternal rewards are given to His children.

(2.) Revelation: Jesus comes back to this earth and establishes His everlasting Kingdom. Every eye will see Him when He comes to the earth (cf. Revelation 1:7 ____ ). -There is disagreement amongst good brethren whether Jesus comes back in the Rapture ‘before’, ‘in the middle of’, ‘during the last part’, ‘at the very end of’ the Tribulation. This is not to be a test of fellowship. What our sister churches agree upon is that Jesus is coming again and that He is coming BEFORE THE MILLENNIAL REIGN (a pre-millennial return). Our doctrinal statement is not based upon Jesus’ coming in relationship to the Tribulation, but in relationship to the Millennium.

- Rapture & Judgment Seat of Christ (Jesus comes in the air for His children)
-Seven Years of Tribulation on this earth (More severe than earth has ever known!
During a portion of this period the antichrist will rule proclaiming that he is god. The false prophet is the religious leader promoting worship of the antichrist.) -Revelation of Jesus (Jesus comes back to this earth.)
-Millennial Reign of Jesus upon this present earth (1,000 years)
[NOTE: The devil will be bound and sin on earth will be kept dormant. There will be peace and prosperity. There will be no wars (Isaiah 2:4____). The animals will be tame and will be plant eaters (Isaiah 11:6-9____; Isaiah 65:25____). Jesus will rule and judge Supremely this earth (Zechariah 14:9____).]
-The devil is released and wages a final rebellion against Jesus. The outcome: “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be __________________ day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10 ____).
-This present earth and heaven shall pass away (II Peter 3:10 - 12 ____ ).
-There will be new heavens and a new earth (Isaiah 65:17____ Isaiah 66:22 ____ II Peter 3:13 ____ Revelation 21:1 ____ ).

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more _______________, neither ________________, nor __________________, neither shall there be any more ____________: for the former things are _____________ away” (Revelation 21:4__).
-The eternal ages (‘the heaven age’)...........………………………………………………

-The Scriptures give abundant proof that the child of God will be with the Lord for ever.

-The Scriptures also give abundant proof concerning those that die lost, without Jesus as their personal Saviour. They will be tormented in hell forever. -“Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into __________________ fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” (Matthew 25:41 ____). -May we all have a great burden to reach out to this lost and dying world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the only hope they have!

-May we rejoice in the ‘exceeding great and precious promises’ (II Peter 1:4 ____) of our Lord. The faithful servants of the Lord have a glorious future before them.

14. The depraved sinner is saved wholly by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the requisites to regeneration are repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that the Holy Spirit convicts sinners, regenerates, seals, secures, and indwells every child of God.

-“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye ________________, ye shall all likewise ________________. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except _______ repent, ye shall __________ likewise perish” (Luke 13:3-5 ____).
[NOTE: ‘Perish’ does not mean to go out of existence. It means to be in a state of ruin, in a condition that is unusable. Spiritually, it means to be in hell separated from God. This was not the condition that God intended for man to be in. ‘Depraved’ = morally bad; corrupt; morally and spiritually bankrupt.]

-“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten __________, that whosoever believeth in Him should ____________ perish, but have everlasting life. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is __________________ already, __________________ he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16 – 18 ____ ).
[NOTE: Here it is clearly stated that the reason people will be condemned and will perish is because they will not believe upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. People will not be in hell because of their drunkedness, immorality, etc. They will be in hell because they refused to believe in and receive Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.]

-“Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, __________________ toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘Repentance’ indicates a change of mind and of heart. Genuine repentance would include sorrow for sinning against God, a turning from going away from God to going to God with one’s heart. It would involve turning from a desire to continue in sin, and a turning from unbelief in Jesus to faith in Him. “Repentance is to be exercised “toward God,” because: (1) Sin has been committed against Him, and it is proper that we express our sorrow to the Being whom we have offended; and, (2) Because only God can pardon. Sincere repentance exists only where there is a willingness to make acknowledgment to the very Being whom we have offended or injured” (Barnes Notes E-Sword).

-“For by ______________ are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of _____________, lest any man should boast” ( Ephesians 2:8, 9 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘Grace’ means ‘unmerited favor’, an ‘undeserved favor’, an ‘unearned gift’. God’s salvation of a person can not be merited, earned, bought or deserved. Salvation is a gift given to those who turn their heart to Him in repentance and who trust in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation can not be earned by any kind or amounts of our works.]

-“And when He is come, He will reprove the world of _________, and of __________________, and of __________________: Of sin, because they believe not on me;” (John 16: 8, 9 ____ )
[NOTE: Jesus is speaking. ‘He’ is the Holy Spirit.]

-“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God _______________ in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is _____________ of His. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is ___________ because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you” ( Romans 8:9 – 11 ____ ).

-“What? know ye not that your body is the ________________ of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your _________? For ye are ________________ with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's” ( I Corinthians 6:19, 20 ____ ).

-“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are _________________ unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30 ____ ).

-“Not by _____________ of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” (Titus 3:5 ____ )
[NOTE: ‘Mercy’ means not getting punishment that is deserved. God’s mercy in salvation delivers the repentant believer from hell. God’s grace in salvation gives the repentant believer eternal life and he becomes a child of God. This person is born again of God, ‘renewing of the Holy Ghost’, he becomes a new creation in Jesus Christ.]

Comments and Other References:

-No one can ‘work’ his way to heaven. The only way to be saved is for God to save the person by His grace and His mercy. God gives the gift of eternal life to everyone who will genuinely repent toward Him, place their belief, their faith and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ and then call upon His name asking for His forgiveness and for His salvation.

-Works that some are trusting in to get them to heaven: baptism, church membership, religion, attempting to keep the Mosaic law, joining a certain denomination, observing ordinances, observing certain rituals, morality, trying to be the best they can with hopes that God will accept them into heaven. NONE of these can cause the new birth. NONE of these can save a person. Good works actually can only be done AFTER a person is saved.

-Works and Grace are mutually exclusive. Works leads to indebtedness. Does God OWE a person salvation because of that person’s works? Not according to the Scriptures.

-“And if by grace, then is it no more of _____________: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more _____________: otherwise work is no more work” ( Romans 11:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: A person must be either saved entirely by his own works and not by God’s grace, OR saved entirely by God’s grace and not by his own works. Which is it? What does God say in His Word? “For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2:8____)].

-Law and Works go together. Grace and Faith go together.

“This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the ______________ of the __________, or by the hearing of faith?” (Galatians 3:2 ____ )
“And the law is not of _______________:….” (Galatians 3:12 ____ ).

-Thus, to believe that one can save himself by his own works is to destroy God’s grace, and Jesus’ redemptive work at Calvary would be in vain. Why would Jesus have to suffer and die if one could just become good enough to merit God’s salvation, or do enough good works to save oneself? This is impossible.

‘I do not _________________ the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the ________, then Christ is dead in vain” (Galatians 2:21 ____ ).
[NOTE: Since the Law is of works, you could imply that, “if righteousness come by our works, then Christ is dead in vain.” This is what believing in works for salvation is really saying.] [NOTE: ‘Frustrate’ means ‘to set aside’, ‘despise’, ‘bring to nought’, ‘reject’. To believe in ones own works for salvation is to do all these things to the grace of God. It would make God’s grace void of value.]

-Works were done for salvation, but not our works. The works for salvation have all been completely done by Jesus Christ. He came, He suffered, He endured the cross, He shed His blood, He ‘bare our sins in His own body on the tree’ (I Peter 2:24 ____), He gave His life. He was buried. He rose again from the dead. Jesus has done all the work required for salvation. He finished the work. Salvation is in Jesus and only in Him.

-“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither ______________, nor _____________, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things _________________, nor things to _______________, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to __________________ us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” ( Romans 8:35 – 39 ____ ).

Comments and Other References:

-Many do not believe in security of the believer, but it is one of the basic cardinal doctrines of the Bible.

-This is another one of the doctrines that one should use in determining if a church is really one of Jesus’ New Testament churches. If the church teaches that a person can be saved and then be lost again, one can be sure that is NOT one of Jesus’ true New Testament churches.

-Once a person has been born again of God, he will from that point forward forever be saved. It is not possible for a child of God to ever be lost again. A child of God can lose the joy of God’s salvation, his fellowship with God by continuing in sin, and eternal rewards, but his salvation can never be lost. Salvation involves a new, spiritual birth.

-In salvation a person is born of God (John 1:12, 13 ____). Is it possible for a child to become ‘unborn’ from his biological parents? How much more impossible would it be to become an ‘unborn’ child of God!

-Even though a Biblical teaching may not be humanly rational, logical or even seem possible to man, and is not believed by man, even the majority of men, if it is clearly taught in the Bible then it is true. If the Bible says it (when rightly divided), it is true and that settles it! Remember, God “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20____). God is so very much higher and greater than man. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways ______________ than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” ( Isaiah 55:8, 9 ____ ). Man has no concept of how high the heavens are. The distance is so great that we have to measure in light years (the distance light would travel in one year, and light travels at about 186,000 miles / second ). This is how much greater and higher that God’s ways and thoughts are above ours.

-“And then will I profess unto them, I _______________knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:23 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is Jesus addressing some religious people, even those who professed to be saved. Some were preachers. Some done what they considered ‘wonderful works’. They all had done what they done ‘in Jesus’ name. But these people were lost. It is NOT that they were once saved and then lost their salvation, they were never truly born again of God. Jesus said that He NEVER knew them.

-“That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have __________________ life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not _______________, but have everlasting life” ( John 3:15, 16 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is probably the most well known Scripture in the world. But if a person, or an organization, believes that a saved person can lose his salvation, then they do not believe these Scriptures. They may know the words, but they have no real spiritual understanding. This would be a real clear manifestation of their spiritual condition. ]

-“For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not His saints; they are _________________ for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off” ( Psalm 37:28 ____ ).
[NOTE: Security of the children of God was taught during the Old Testament days.]

-“Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and ____________________ in Jesus Christ, and called:” (Jude 1 ____ ).

-“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall ________________ thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into _______________________ life” ( John 4:14 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus certainly knew what He was saying. He is truth. He can not lie. We can absolutely depend on the Scriptures.]

-“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me _____________ everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not ____________” ( John 6:47 - 50 ____).
[NOTE: Notice, that ‘hath’ is present tense. A person who has received Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour by faith in Him presently has everlasting life. A saved person will never die spiritually.]

-“And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never ___________. Believest thou this? She saith unto Him, __________, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world” ( John 11:26, 27 ____ ).
[NOTE: Those who have believed in Jesus and received Him as personal Saviour will never die. This death is speaking of the spiritual, eternal death, which is eternal separation from God. Saved people will experience physical death, but never spiritual death. Born once, die twice. [Physical birth; die physically and die spiritually] Born twice, die once. [Physical birth and spiritual birth; physical death] Jesus said, “Ye must be born __________” (John 3:7____). ]

-“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit ____________; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of ____________” ( I John 3:9 ____ ).
[NOTE: To properly understand security of the believer, we must understand that salvation is of God. The new birth is a spiritual birth from God. His seed remains in His children. The new man, the inner man born of God, within the child of God, never sins. He is eternally pure. The old man, the outer man (the flesh nature) will sin (I John 1:8-10 ____ ). (cf. Romans 7:15-25 ____concerning the Apostle Paul)]

-It was never the sinLESSness of a sinner that caused him to be saved.

-It can never be the sinFULness of a saved person that could cause him to be lost again.

-Children of God will sin. That is not what we desire, but we are still in the flesh with the fleshly, Adamic, sinful nature. The child of God has TWO natures. The nature of the inner man born of God is a divine nature ( II Peter 1:4____), the nature of the outer man is sinful (‘the flesh’).

-To the members of the churches in Galatia, who were saved people, God inspired the following: “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are _________________ the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would” (Galatians 5:17 ____ ).

-“But this man, because He continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore He is able also to save them to the ____________________ that come unto God by Him, seeing He _____________ liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:24, 25 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘this man’ that has ‘an unchangeable priesthood’ is the Lord Jesus Christ. He saves to the “uttermost’ (totally, completely, perfectly).]

-The Scriptures never speak of anyone who was saved ever loosing his salvation.

-The Scriptures never speak of anyone who was saved being un-adopted by his heavenly Father.

-The Scriptures never speak about being born again and again and again.

-The Scriptures never speak about being passed from life unto death.

-Hebrews 6:4-6____

-A person is saved by the Lord, and a person is kept saved by the Lord.

-We did not save ourselves and we can not keep ourselves saved.

-The Lord promises to keep saved all those who are saved. His salvation is forever.

-He does not give the gift of eternal life and then take it away. He does deal with sin in the lives of His children, He chastises us, He disciplines us, but we are still His children. “For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth ______________ son whom He receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6 ____ ).

-If a saved person could ever be lost again for even the smallest fraction of a second, the Bible is untrue and God would be a liar. But the Bible is true and God can not lie. He is truth.

-When we sin, we are to forsake it and confess it to God. We must agree with Him that what we have done was sinful, wrong and offensive to Him. We must agree with Him that we are guilty of this sin. This is what ‘to confess’ means. Then we are to ask for His forgiveness and His mercy.

-Believing this clearly-taught Biblical doctrine of security of the believer should give the child of God great peace, rest, comfort and assurance. A child of God can lay down at night knowing that if he should leave this life he will go to be with the Lord. We can face each new day with the same assurance in Him.

-God wants His children to have confidence in Him. He wants us to believe Him rather that what might seem to be humanly rational or humanly logical.

-A child of God never has to worry about if he has sinned enough to be lost again, it can’t happen. A child of God is eternally secure in Christ. “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with ____________ in God” (Colossians 3:3 ____).

-Remember, at salvation God becomes our Father. How He loves His children! All that He does for His children will be good and right.

-How this should encourage us to love our precious Saviour more and more and to strive to please Him with our life and service.

-Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world (cf. John 1:29___).

“…Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and _____________, and glory, and blessing” (Revelation 5:12____).
[NOTE: This is a proclaimation of Jesus’ worthiness of these 7 great and eternal attributes.]

16. God deals with believers as His children. He chastises His disobedient children and He rewards the obedient.

-“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He shall __________________ every man according to his ____________” ( Matthew 16:27 ____ ). [NOTE: We are saved by God’s grace, through our faith in Jesus Christ, but we will be judged and rewarded according to our works.]

-“For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and _____________________ with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been __________________ over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the _________ of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, ____________ and faithful servant; thou hast been _________________ over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:14-23 ____ ).

-“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the ___________ of God, even to them that believe on His name:” ( John 1:12 ____ ).
[NOTE: A person must receive the Lord Jesus Christ. That is the name that must be believed on.]

-“And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto _______________, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him: For whom the Lord ______________ He chasteneth, and _________________ every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” ( John 8:43, 44 ____ ).
[NOTE: Also, refer to Acts 13:10 ____.]

-A child of God can be an obedient child or a disobedient child. There are consequences in being an obedient child of God (joy, blessings, eternal rewards, pleasing to the Lord, etc.) and there are consequences in being a disobedient child of God (loss of joy, heartache, loss of eternal rewards, displeasing to the Lord, etc.).
[NOTE: See some of the promises made to Israel for being obedient ( Deuteronomy 28:1-14 ____ ) and for being disobedient ( Deuteronomy 28:15-68 ____ ) ].

-Remember, what God instructs and commands of us, is for His glory and for our good. “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to ____________ the LORD thy God, to ______________ in all His ways, and to ____________ Him, and to _______________ the LORD thy God with ________ thy heart and with all thy soul, To ____________ the commandments of the LORD, and His statutes, which I command thee this day for thy ______________?” ( Deuteronomy 10:12, 13 ____ ).

-Chastisement: Action that God takes in the lives of His children. It implies: correction; molding of character by reproof and admonition; instruction; discipline (by punishment); His motive in doing this is His love for His children.

-The order God seemingly follows in dealing with disobedience in His children: Of course, God deals with His children individually. He knows how long to deal with His children in each phase. He already knows the eternal future.
-Conviction: the Holy Spirit convicts the saved person of sin. If there is no turning from this sin, or confession of this sin to God, then,
-Chastisement: The Lord chastens and scourges His child that has not turned from disobedience, though He convicted him. If there is no turning from this sin, or confession of this sin to God, then,
-Calls His child home: This would be the sin unto death. (cf. I John 5:16____; Acts 5:1-11____; I Corinthians 11:30____). (As you can see, to rebel and disobey God is very serious.)

-A person might say, “I am having troubles in my life and I feel convicted by the Lord, am I being punished by God?” This person must do a self-exam:

-(1) Do you know that you are saved? Make absolutely sure that the Spirit of Christ dwells within you. If you are not saved, maybe the Lord is dealing with you and wanting you to turn to Him and receive Jesus as your personal Saviour. You must repent toward God, believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ, believe the gospel of Christ and then pray and ask the Lord to forgive you of your sins and to save you.

-(2) If you know you are saved, and thus a child of God, bought with the blood of Jesus, and know that you have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in you, Are you being obedient to your heavenly Father? A. Have you followed in Scriptural baptism? (This is the first commandment after salvation. It publicly identifies the child of God with the Triune Godhead. It is a public and visible testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.) [NOTE: Sprinkling or pouring water is not Scriptural baptism.]

B. Are you a member of a Scriptural New Testament church? (“Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus…” Ephesians 3:21____).
[NOTE: To be Scriptural a church must be “the pillar and the ground of the truth” I Timothy 3:15 ___, and Jesus is her Foundation and her Head.]

C. Are you serving the Lord faithfully as a member? Are you a “worker” in the Lord’s church? (“..it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” I Corinthians 4:2 ____ ; I Corinthians 15:58 ____). If you are saved, have Scriptural baptism and a member of a Scriptural New Testament church and being faithfully obedient, perhaps the Lord is testing your faith so you might become a stronger witness for Him, or preparing you for days ahead, or using you as an example for others, or, some other great purpose. Continue in your faithful service and commitment to the Lord and His church. If you are saved, have Scriptural baptism and a member of a Scriptural New Testament church and you are not being faithfully obedient, perhaps the Lord is chastising you. The wise thing to do is to repent and submit to the Lord’s will and become an obedient, faithful child of His.[No one else can examine your life and heart besides you and the Lord. Only you can answer these questions for yourself. This list does not even pretend to be an all inclusive list, but is for guidance only.]

-[If a person is disobedient and is not convicted nor chastened by the Lord, he needs to examine his salvation in light of God’s Word. Also, just because things are going smoothly and good, maybe even prosperous in a person’s life does not even mean that that person is saved. A person must know that he has been born again of God.]

-“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God ______________ believe that He is, _____________ that He is a ___________________ of them that _________________ seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6 ____ ).

[NOTE: There are degrees of rewards in heaven. As varied as God’s children’s work will be, so varied will be their rewards.]

-“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, ____ ____ __________ of them: otherwise ye have ______ reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in _______________: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall ________________ thee openly” (Matthew 6:1-4 ____ ).
[NOTE: There are qualifications for rewards concerning the good works that we may do. We are not to do the works for the eyes or praise of men, but for God.]

-“For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their _______________, and according to the ___________ of their own hands” ( Jeremiah 25:14 ____ ).

[NOTE: These two passages in the Old Testament show the general principle in understanding how the Lord will judge humanity.]

-“And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the ___________________ of the just” ( Luke 14:14 ___ ).
[NOTE: In this verse we may have an indication when the Judgment Seat of Christ takes place and rewards given by the Lord.]

-“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the ___________, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain _______the Lord (I Corinthians 15:58 ____ ).
[NOTE: The ‘work’ that we are to be most concerned with in this life is ‘the work of the Lord’, through one of His New Testament churches. Remember, I Corinthians was written to a New Testament church: 1:2___.]

-Our motive for serving the Lord is not for the rewards, but because we love Him. We want to be devoted to our glorious and wonderful Saviour Jesus Christ ! We desire to serve Him and honor Him with our lives in such a way to be well-pleasing unto Him. We must serve Him in the manner that He tells us in His Word. The Lord wants us to know that He will reward each one according to each individual’s work.

-Each person determines the extent of rewards which will be given him by the Lord, based on his own work for the Lord, done scripturally, that he does in this present life.

17. Jesus Christ established His church during His ministry on earth and each one is always a local, visible assembly of Scripturally baptized believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Commission and commands of the Lord Jesus Christ. Each one of His churches is an independent, self-governing body, and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it. Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission to His New Testament churches only, and He promised the perpetuity of His churches.

-“And Jesus, walking by the sea of ____________________, saw two brethren, _________________called Peter, and _________________his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And He saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of _____________. And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him. And going on from thence, He saw other two brethren, _______________ the son of Zebedee, and ____________ his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed Him” ( Matthew 4:18-22 ____ ).
[ NOTE: These 4 men that Jesus called had already been saved and had been Scripturally baptized by John the Baptist. When Jesus called out Peter and Andrew and they followed Him. This was the first New Testament church.]

-Jesus said, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this _________ I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” ( Matthew 16:18 ____ ).
[ NOTE: The New Testament church is not built upon Peter, it is built upon Jesus Christ. Jesus is the foundation rock and He is the builder. Peter’s name is Petros and ‘rock’ is petra. Petros means a stone, “a piece or fragment of a rock such as a man might throw” The word petra means “A projecting rock, cliff, a mass of rock, an immovable rock” [Zodhiates. The Complete Word Study Dictionary. p.1154]. We might think of Petros as a little pebble and petra as a massive mountain. The Lord’s church is not founded upon a pebble (Peter), it is founded upon a massive mountain that is unmoveable (Jesus). It is founded upon Jesus Himself. Even though the devil will attack the Lord’s churches with a desire and fury to destroy it, he will be unable to. The Lord’s churches will be upon this earth when He comes in the rapture to take her and all the other saved people back to heaven with Him.]

-“Go ye therefore, and ___________________ all nations, ______________________ them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: ___________________ them to observe _________ things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” ( Matthew 28:19, 20 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is the Great Commission Jesus has given to His churches. It includes a wonderful promise to His churches, that He Himself would always be with His churches. No one but the Lord’s New Testament churches have been given this Commission. The main points of the Commission are:
---Go ye therefore (go to the people; as you are going about in life).
-Teach all nations (this ‘teach’ is to teach them, people of nations, how to be saved and how to be disciples of Jesus Christ).
---Baptizing them (this is the first commandment after salvation; this is to be the first act of obedience for a new child of God. This must be Scriptural baptism, complete immersion and submersion in water by the authority of a Scriptural New Testament church. After this they are qualified to be church members.)
---Teaching them to observe all things that the Lord commanded His church (after salvation, after baptism, after church membership then these persons can be taught the things of the Lord. They must have humility and a willingness to learn. Until a person goes through all these steps and then continues to be taught and to grow in the Lord he can never become what the Lord wants him to be.) ]

-“Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the ___________________ of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: _________________ ye, and __________________ the gospel. Now as He walked by the sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and ____________________ Him. And when He had gone a little farther thence, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway He called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after Him” ( Mark 1:14-20 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus began His church while He was here on earth, during the early part of His ministry. The usual teaching by Protestant ‘churches’ is that His church was started on the day of Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection. This is NOT true. This is another devilish attack on truth and on the Lord’s churches. True Missionary Baptist churches are not Protestant churches. The Lord’s churches were never a part of a heretical group. They have always remained separate.]

-By the time of the day of Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection, the already existing New Testament church had already baptized believers (John 4:1, 2____), had elected a treasurer (John 12:6____; John 13:29____), had observed the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29____), had been taught about church discipline (Matthew 18:15-19), had a church business meeting and had elected a replacement for Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:15- 26____). On the day of Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection, the already existing church was “endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49____; cf. Acts 1:8____).

-John 1:35 - 51 ____

35 “Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the ______________ of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, __________________, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where He dwelt, and abode with Him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed Him, was _________________, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He first findeth his own brother _______________, and saith unto him, We have found the __________________, which is, being interpreted, the _________________.
42 And he ________________ him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth ________________, and saith unto him, Follow me.
44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip findeth _________________, and saith unto him, We have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, _______________ and see.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of _____________; thou art the ____________ of Israel.
50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 And He saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of ___________.”
[NOTE: See the pattern for evangelism. This is how Jesus’ church grew. People brought other people to Jesus. They presented Him as the Lamb of God, the Son of God (vs. 49), the Son of man (vs. 51), the Christ, the King of Israel, etc. Jesus is all this and much more. ]

-The Lord’s church is very, very important. How we behave in and treat the Lord’s church is how we treat Him personally. We see this in the behavior of Saul of Tarsus. He persecuted the Lord’s church and made havock of it (Acts 8:1, 3____ 9:1____ 26:10, 11 ____; Galatians 1:13, 14____).

Each of these titles and descriptions has it’s own special meaning as to the value and function of His churches. Each one of His churches has been purchased with His blood. Jesus loves each one of His true New Testament churches!

18. There are two pictorial ordinances in the Lord’s churches: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Scriptural baptism is the immersion of penitent believers in water, administered by the authority of a New Testament church in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial ordinance, restricted to the members of the church observing the ordinance.

-“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the _________________, and of the ____________, and of the ___________ ________________: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” ( Matthew 28:19, 20 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus, after His resurrection, is giving the Great Commission to His church‘; ‘in the name of’ – shows the unity of the Triune Godhead. cf. I John 5:7 ____ ]

-“But when they __________________ Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts 8:12 ____ ).
[NOTE: The order: salvation (‘believed’) then baptism.]

-“And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both _____________ the _________________, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him” (Acts 8:38 ____ ).
[NOTE: Philip did not just ‘pour’ or ‘sprinkle’ water on the eunuch.]

-“Therefore we are ________________ with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in ___________________ of life” ( Romans 6:4 ____ ).

-“But now I have written unto you not to keep _________________, if any man that is called a ________________ be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to ___________. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are ________________? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among __________________ that wicked person” ( I Corinthians 5:11-13 ____ ).
[ NOTE: The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper is restricted. The church must discipline her disorderly members by exclusion. The excluded member would not then be in fellowship with that church and not allowed to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Since only members of a particular New Testament church can be disciplined by that church, it is only reasonable, and Scriptural, that only members of that particular church can partake of the Lord’s Supper. This is one of the main reasons we believe in closed communion. A church has to have the right to discipline all those who partake of this ordinance, and she has no authority over anyone besides her own members. cf. I Corinthians 11:31, 32____]

-“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the _____________________, as I delivered them to you” ( I Corinthians 11:1, 2 ____ ).

-“Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. For first of all, when ye come __________________ in the _______________, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. When ye come together therefore into ________ ______________, this is not to eat the Lord's Supper” ( I Corinthians 11:17-20 ____ ).

-“For as often as ye eat ____________ bread, and ___________ this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death _________ He come” ( I Corinthians 11:26 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘This’ bread and ‘this’ cup is the unleavened bread and the unfermented grape juice that the church prepares and sets apart as elements in this ordinance to remember the sinless body and sinless blood of Jesus Christ that He gave in His willing death for our sins. ]

Comments and Other References:

-A church ordinance might be defined as, “An outward symbol, divinely appointed to represent a great fact and truth of the gospel and the personal relation of the believer to that fact and truth”. “A decree set forth by Christ Himself by which the observing church is to remember and celebrate the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ”. “..an outward and visible symbolic rite commanded in the Bible to be practiced by the church(es) which sets forth a central truth of the Christian faith. It is a memorial or reminder of some precious historical event”. Baptism portrays in a visible sense the death (in the water), the burial (under the water) and the resurrection (up out of the water) of Jesus Christ. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial Supper to be observed by His churches in memory of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

-The Lord has given His churches two ordinances for them to carefully observe: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The Lord has given only His New Testament churches the authority to administer and partake of these two ordinances. No other individual, ministry, body or group has been given authority from God to administer or partake of the church ordinances.

-Both ordinances should be observed as given in the Scriptures and not according to human wisdom or tradition. No one is at liberty to modify, change or alter these ordinances. (Example: baptism must be by immersion, etc. )

-Here is the order that the Lord gives:
1). Salvation 2). Scriptural Baptism 3). Membership in a Scriptural New Testament church 4). Faithful Service 5). Partakes of the Lord’s Supper

-Proper observation of these two church ordinances pleases God. It was after Jesus’ baptism that the heavenly Father stated, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am _________ pleased” (Matthew 3:17 ____ ).

-Improper observation of these ordinances displeases God. Some church members at Corinth were guilty of this. “For this cause many are ____________ and sickly among you, and many ______________” ( I Corinthians 11:30 ____ ).

-In baptism the Lord’s death, burial and resurrection is pictured and should cause us all to remember Him. Also, it is a picture of the individual’s spiritual cleansing from sin by the blood of Jesus Christ. It also is a public identification with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

-In the Lord’s Supper the unleavened bread is a memorial of Jesus’ sinless body that was broken for us. The bread is broken from one loaf, showing the unity of the body of Christ, His church. The pure unfermented grape juice is a memorial of Jesus’ sinless blood that He shed for us. Likewise, it being poured from one container shows unity.

-Observing the ordinances does not save anyone nor keep anyone saved. They were never given for that purpose. In both ordinances it is the Lord Jesus Christ that is to be seen and remembered.

-It is a great blessing and privilege to be a member of one of the Lord’s true New Testament churches and to observe these ordinances that Jesus gave to His churches. These two ordinances have been observed by His churches from the time He instituted them.

19. There are two divinely appointed offices in a church, pastors and deacons, to be filled by men whose qualifications are set forth in Titus and I Timothy.

-“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain ______________ in every city, as I had appointed thee:” (Titus 1:5 ____ ).
[NOTE: Elders = presbuterous; mature spiritually; “The word always implying dignity and wisdom.” (A Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament. Bullinger p. 245). This term denotes “the dignity of the office” (Bullinger p. 102). Pastors are thus spoken of as elders and also as bishops.]

-“If any be _________________, the husband of ___________ wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or ________________” (Titus 1:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: Blameless = “with nothing laid to one’s charge, (as a result of public investigation), though blamed yet undeserving of blame.” (Bullinger p. 103) The pastor must be a male adult, since he must be the husband of one wife.]

-“For a _________________ must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no _______________, not given to filthy lucre;” (Titus 1:7 ____ ).
[NOTE: Bishop = episkopon; overseer, watching over, taking care of; This term denotes the “duties of the office” (Bullinger p. 102). Blameless = see vs. 6. Steward = “a house manager, one who had authority over the servants of a family” Bullinger p. 736].

-“But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, ________________, just, holy, temperate;” (Titus 1:8 ____ ).
[NOTE: Sober = “sound mind; used of one who follows sound reason” Bullinger p. 713. Temperate = self-control].

-“Holding _____________ the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers” (Titus 1:9 ____ ).
[NOTE: God’s Word is faithful, infinitely trustworthy; to hold His Word fast would imply not compromising, perverting nor corrupting His Word (cf. II Corinthians 2:17 ___). The gainsayers are those who speak against the truth. God’s Word is truth.]

-“This is a true saying, If a man _____________ the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work” ( I Timothy 3:1 ____ ).
[NOTE: God places this desire within the heart of those men He calls to preach His Word and to Pastor His churches.]

-“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, ________________, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;” ( I Timothy 3:2 ____ ).
[NOTE: Vigilant = “sober of mind, watchful, circumspect” Bullinger p. 848; thus, it means to exercise care in order to live a godly life.].

-“Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a _______________, not covetous;” ( I Timothy 3:3 ____ ).
[NOTE: Some things the Pastor is not to be. Not a brawler = “disinclinded to fight, peaceful” Bullinger p. 111].

-“One that ruleth well his own house, having his __________________ in subjection with all gravity;” ( I Timothy 3:4 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘gravity’ implies seriousness.]

-“(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the ________________ of God?)” ( I Timothy 3:5 ____ ).
[NOTE: Each one of Jesus’ churches is God’s house.]

-“Not a novice, lest being lifted up with _______________ he fall into the condemnation of the devil” ( I Timothy 3:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: Novice = “newly planted; one newly come to the faith” Bullinger p. 538. Notice that the devil is interested in hindering God’s preachers and tempting them with pride. Be sure to always pray for your pastor. Preachers must always be on guard against the sin of pride.]

-“Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the _________________ of the devil” ( I Timothy 3:7 ____ ).
[NOTE: Again we find that the devil is working to influence and hinder the life of the Pastor.]

-“Likewise must the _________________ be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;” ( I Timothy 3:8 ____ ).
[NOTE: Deacons = diakonos; “a servant, attendant, waiter at table” Bullinger p. 205]

-“Holding the mystery of the faith in a _____________ conscience” ( I Timothy 3:9 ____ ).

-“And let these ___________ first be _____________; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless” ( I Timothy 3:10 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘blameless’ see Note on Titus 1:6, page 69; ‘proved’ means to be tested, examined. The church is to test the prospective deacon’s life by observing his life for a time period and questioning him from the Bible on his beliefs and understanding of Bible doctrines. Prospective Pastors are to be proven this same way.]

-“Even so must their ________________ be grave, not slanderers, sober, __________________ in all things” ( I Timothy 3:11 ____ ).

-“Let the deacons be the husbands of ___________ wife, ruling their children and their own houses well” ( I Timothy 3:12 ____ ).

-“For they that have used the office of a deacon ___________ purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus” ( I Timothy 3:13 ____ ). [NOTE: ‘a good degree’ may imply a certain degree of rewards the Lord will give on the Judgment Day.]

Comments and Other References:

-These two offices have been established by the Lord.<>br> PASTORS:
-God calls m

en to preach and then places a desire within some to be Pastors of one of His churches. -The word ‘Pastor’ means “a shepherd, one who tends herds or flocks, not merely one who feeds, but one who tends, guides, nourishes, cherishes, and rules, etc.” (Bullinger p.574).

-“The elders which are among you I ______________, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a __________________ of the glory that shall be revealed:” ( I Peter 5:1 ____).

[NOTE: It is a joy and a blessing to have those who encourage and help the Pastor. It is unprofitable for those who cause him grief. The Pastor is “rule well” (I Timothy 5:17___), that is, he to “take care of the church of God” (I Timothy 3:5___).]

DEACONS: (Acts 6:1-7)
-“And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were _____________________ in the daily ministration” (Acts 6:1 ____ )

-“Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not ________________ that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables” (Acts 6:2 ____ ).

-“Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven _____________ of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and ___________________, whom we may appoint over this ______________________” (Acts 6:3 ____ ).
[NOTE: These would be the Deacons. Also, note the qualifications in this verse for Deacons.]

-“But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the ______________” (Acts 6:4 ____).
[NOTE: This is the duty of the Pastors. They are to pray, read and study, meditate on, teach and preach the Word of God.]

-“Even _______the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to ________________, and to give His life a ransom for many” ( Matthew 20:28 ____ ).

Comments and Other References:

-See the previous study on Doctrine # 17. That Doctrinal study says in part, “..and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it (the New Testament church).”

-The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of each one of His New Testament churches. There is no one else (association, fellowship, auxiliary, committee, denomination, convention, man, etc.) who has any authority over any of His churches. Only the Lord has authority over His churches. Every one of His New Testament churches is to yield completely to Jesus’ authority.

-“And He is the ___________ of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence” ( Colossians 1:18 ____ ).
[NOTE: ‘He’ refers to the Lord Jesus Christ.]

-The Lord has given His churches authority to present the Gospel so that people can hear, and hopefully believe and be saved, authority to administer Scriptural Baptism and authority to teach His Word to those who have followed in the above first two steps. This authority can not be given or transferred to any other entity. All that any New Testament church does must be within the bounds and according to the Scriptures.

-“And Jesus came and spake unto ____________, saying, ________ power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18 ____ ).
[NOTE: Jesus was speaking to ‘them’ as a New Testament church. If the Great Commission was given to them as men or as Apostles then there is presently no Great Commission existing, since these men have died and the office of Apostle no longer exists. He was giving this to them as ‘His body, the church’. Since His churches are still in existence today, so is the Great Commission still in effect.]

-“_______ ye therefore, and _____________all nations, _____________________ them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19 ____ ).

-“___________________ them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:20 ____ ).

-The authority the Lord has given His churches is only that within the bounds of Scripture.

-All ministries (CD, Bible, Nursing Home, Community Visitation, V.B.S., radio ministries, etc.) of a church come under the authority of that church.

-All ancillary groups of a church (Men’s Fellowship, Ladies Auxiliary, Youth Groups, etc.) come under the authority of that church. None of these are to function independently of church authority.

-All officers and teachers of a church come under the authority of that church.

-All members of a church come under the authority of that church.

-The New Testament church has authority from the Lord to judge offenses and disagreements between members of that church, and to carry out church discipline. -Matthew 18:15-18 ____ -I Corinthians 6:1-8 ____ I Corinthians 5:1-13 ____

-Churches can cooperate, associate and fellowship as long as one does not attempt to exercise authority over a sister church. (Acts 15 is an example of a church seeking advice from a sister church. The Jerusalem church made their recommendations to the Antioch church. Cooperation is also seen in the collection of funds by church for the sister church in Jerusalem (Acts 11:29,30____; Romans 15:26____; I Corinthians 16:1____) ).

-Churches of the American Baptist Association work together in areas such as: Missions, Schools, Publications, Youth Camps, Various Ministries (O.M.D., N.E.O.M.D., Bible Ministries, CD Ministries, Prison Ministries, etc.), help with church buildings and property, special needs (help for missionaries needs) and more. When votes are taken every New Testament church has equal number of votes irregardless of the church size or amount of it’s contributions to that particular entity.

-No church has any authority over any other church in any area. Each New Testament church is totally separate and independent of all others. Example, in the observation of the Lord’s Supper, only members of a particular church can observe this church ordinance. No one else has the scriptural right.

-The Lord’s church is to yield to Him and live to honor Him, not to exercise authority over others. “Unto Him be _______________ in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen” (Ephesians 3:21 ____).

-May we all continue to love the Lord and serve Him as a faithful member of one of His true, New Testament churches.

21. There is to be freedom of worship without interference from the government and we affirm our belief in civil obedience, unless the laws and regulations of civil government run contrary to the Holy Scriptures, then we are to “..obey God rather than men.”

ROMANS 13:1-7
-“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are _____________________ of God” ( Romans 13:1 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is speaking of governmental powers, civil government.]

-“Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of ___________: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation” ( Romans 13:2 ____ ).
[NOTE: To resist the power would be to disobey the law of the land or show disrespect toward those that God has placed in these positions. Damnation = judgment; cf. vs. 4; those who knowingly break the laws of the land; tax-evaders; when there was a draft, the draft-dodgers; speeders, etc., whether man catches them at breaking the law or not, God knows and God will judge.]

-“For _______________ are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is ______________, and thou shalt have praise of the same:” ( Romans 13:3 ____ ).

-“For he is the _________________ of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth ____________” ( Romans 13:4____).

-“Wherefore ye _____________ needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for __________________ sake” ( Romans 13:5 ____ ).
[NOTE: Conscience toward God. cf. I Peter 3:21____ “good conscience toward God”]

-“For for this cause pay ye __________________ also: for they are ________________ ministers, attending continually upon this very thing” ( Romans 13:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: God places people in these positions, they are His servants.]

-“Render therefore to ____________ their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour” ( Romans 13:7 ____ ).
[NOTE: Render = repay; recompense]

-“Submit yourselves to ______________ ordinance of man for the ________________ sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;” ( I Peter 2:13 ____ ).
[NOTE: Submit = to willingly put ones self under (another’s authority); to yield.]

-“Or unto _________________, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well” ( I Peter 2: 14 ____ ).

-“For so is the _____________ of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:” ( I Peter 2:15 ____ ).
[NOTE: We find the will of God in the Word of God.]

Comments and Other References:

-Here are 2 verses that will help us in understanding the context of I Peter 2:13-15. Our fleshly lusts include doing what we naturally want to do instead of being told what to do by others, including those powers and authorities established by the Lord. We are prone to selfish pride and arrogance.

-“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, __________________ from fleshly lusts, which war against the ________________;” ( I Peter 2:11 ____ ).
[NOTE: This is a spiritual war and involves spiritual matters including submission to the Lord and the powers He sets in place on this earth.]

-“Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good _______________, which they shall behold, glorify ____________ in the day of visitation” ( I Peter 2:12 ____ ).

-“Put them in mind to be ____________________ to principalities and powers, to _____________ magistrates, to be ready to every good work,” (Titus 3:1 ____ ).
[NOTE: To be submissive to governmental powers was to be preached and taught to the church by Pastor Titus. This submission and obedience is a good work.]

-“This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High _______________ in the kingdom of _______________, and giveth it to whomsoever He will, and setteth up over it the basest of men” ( Daniel 4:17 ____ ).
[NOTE: cf. Daniel 4:25, 35 ____]

-We are to obey the laws of the land, unless some law is contrary to the Word of God. At that point we must obey the Word of God.

-“Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey ___________ rather than men” (Acts 5:28, 29 ____ ).

-“And He said unto them, _________________ therefore unto ________________ the things which be Caesar's, and unto __________ the things which be God's” ( Luke 20:25 ____ ).
[NOTE: Render to Caesar: Taxes, Respect of authority, Obedience of the civil laws, etc. Render to God: Love, Honor, Respect, Fear, Loyalty, Faithful Service, Worship, Our life, etc.]

I TIMOTHY 2:1-6

-“I exhort therefore, that, _______________ of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for _________ men;” ( I Timothy 2:1 ____ )
[NOTE: Notice what is to be made for all these: Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions and Giving of Thanks for all these.]

-“ For _______________, and for __________ that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” ( I Timothy 2:2 ____ ).

-“For this is good and ____________________ in the sight of God our Saviour;” ( I Timothy 2:3 ____ ).

-“Who will have ____________ men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” ( I Timothy 2:4 ____ ).
[NOTE: God has a genuine, deep desire for all people, even the most depraved, vile, most cruel criminal to be saved. This is His will. He does not want any person to die lost irregardless of what sins they are guilty of. God gets no pleasure when the lost wicked person dies (cf. Ezekiel 33:11 ____). If any person will turn to God in repentance, believe the gospel of Christ, have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and call upon the name of the Lord asking for His mercy, His forgiveness of sin and for salvation, God will by His grace and mercy give the gift of eternal life to that person, without exception.]

-“For there is ______________ God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” ( I Timothy 2:5 ____ ).
[NOTE: We just have to be concerned with serving and pleasing ONE true and living God.]

-“Who gave Himself a ransom for ___________, to be testified in due time” ( I Timothy 2:6 ____ ).
[NOTE: Consider the word “all” in vss. 1, 2, 4, 6.]

-The Lord wants us to learn SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY. He wants us learn from this that He has ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OVER ALL, and that we are to submit to Him in all things.

-A person is to learn to submit to authority from their youth and up: First, to Parents. Later, to School Officials (if in public Schools). Others we are to submit to: Government (Laws, Officials), Police, Employers. Also, we are to learn to submit: To the Bible, To the leadership of the Holy Spirit, To the New Testament church. Wives are to submit to their own husbands. If we submit to the Lord, we will submit to all these. If we do not submit to all these, then we are not submitting to the Lord (irregardless of what we may say or think).

-“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the _________________ of ______________” ( I Corinthians 10:31 ____ ).

-May we always seek to please the Lord in all that we do. Involved in this is submission to civil government. Where the laws of the land are contrary to the Word of God we must obey God and not man.

22. The Bible definition of marriage is the union between a man and a woman.

-“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called ____________, because she was aken out of _________. Therefore shall a ________ leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his __________: and they shall be ________ flesh” (Genesis 2:21-24____).
[NOTE: This would imply that the woman was also to leave her father and her mother.]

-“And He answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them _________ and ___________, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath ____________ together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:4-6____).

-“But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man ___________ his father and mother, and ____________ to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put _____________” (Mark 10:6-9__).

-“Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every __________ have his own wife, and let every _____________ have her own husband. Let the ____________ render unto the _________ due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife” (I Corinthians 7:2-4____).

-“Wives, ___________ yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the _____________ is the head of the __________, even as Christ is the head of the church: and He is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, _________ your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the ___________, That He might present it to Himself a ____________ church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be _________ flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning ____________ and the ____________. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband” (Ephesians 5:22-33____).

Comments and Other References:

-The Lord instituted marriage, and He is the One who gives the qualifications for the ones being married. It is the Lord who joins together a man and a woman in matrimony. Since God’s children are also to obey every ordinance of man, the marriage should be performed legally (marriage license; marriage service to be done by one legally authorized to do so; recorded and documented by appropriate county officials, etc.).

-In a marriage, God has given the husbands certain responsibilities and He has given the wives certain responsibilities. Each one is responsible to the Lord for how he and she fulfills these Biblical responsibilities. The best marriage is one in which both the husband and the wife are saved, children of God, and are faithful and obedient to the Word of God in submission to the Lord, laboring together with the Lord in one of His true New Testament churches (Psalm 127:1____).

-A man can not marry a man, and a woman can not marry a woman. Man’s law may endorse and recognize these as marriages, but God will not join these, nor recognize these as being married. Instead, these would be partakers of the sins of sodomy and/or homosexuality.

-Homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord and has terrible consequences
(cf. Leviticus 18:22 ____ 20:13____; Deuteronomy 23:17, 18____; Judges 19:23, 23____ (‘wickedly’); Romans 1:24-32____ (‘vile affections’); I Corinthians 6:9-11____ (‘effeminate’ ‘abusers of themselves with mankind’); Colossians 3:5, 6____ (‘inordinate affection’).

-Sodom was a place given over to sodomy and the Lord punished them greatly. The sodomites were described by the Lord as being ‘wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly’ (Genesis 13:13____). The LORD destroyed them with brimstone and fire (Genesis 19:24, 25____). “Even as _____________ and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an _____________, suffering the vengeance of eternal __________” (Jude 7____).

-Hebrews 13:4____: “Marriage is ______________ in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge”.

-Scriptural marriage, of a man and a woman, is an honorable institution and it is a type, a picture, of Jesus and His bride, His church (II Corinthians 11:2____; Ephesians 5:22- 33, note vs. 32).

-The Lord hates divorce (“putting away”): Malachi 2:16 ___
